My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts
Windy,
cloudy, rainy with snow on the Peaks.
I was
prepared to wake up to a slight covering of snow. Instead, it was raining and
there were dead pine needles everywhere from the wind. Guess I’ll wait a little
longer for snow.
Unsettling news
story: The biological sisters of Sacheen Littlefeather, the lady who refused
Marlon Brando’s Academy Award decades ago and to whom the Academy had
apologized, are now saying that their sister lived in a fantasy world. Her
father was Mexican, her mother was white. Her grandfather had abused her father
in his youth. They showed biographical records to support their story. There are
also no records showing that she is White Mountain Apache, as she claimed. If
this account is true, it is discouraging that the media, Brando, or her family did
not speak of this decades ago. If it is true, I get that the White Mountain
Apache did not speak out as there are ‘wannabes’ [want to be Indians] all around.

The Ides of
March
In early
Roman calendars, Martius (March) was the first month of the year and dates were
expressed by lunar phases as Kalends (Kal), Nones (Non), and Ides (Id). Ides of
March referred to the first full moon of the year. Full moons have their own
association with bad juju, but the real negative context of March 15 started
with the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BC. Centuries later, the day
continued to be marred by everything from catastrophic weather events to the
cancelation of the Ed Sullivan Show.
They live among us
I was at the airport, checking in at the
gate when an airport employee asked,
'Has anyone put anything in your baggage
without your knowledge?'
To which I replied, 'If it was without my
knowledge, how would I know?'
He smiled knowingly and nodded, 'That's
why we ask.'
