day, not too hot, not too cool. Goldilocks is happy.
This
year we had an early monsoon start in May, then there was nothing in June or
July. Now the monsoon has returned. I’ll take the moisture whenever it comes.

Statue of Liberty …
The
statue’s torch was exhibited in Philadelphia—and she almost ended up there.
The
torch was exhibited to great success at
the 1876 world’s fair in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia; fairgoers paid admission
to climb up into the torch and take in the view from the top. With the funds
raised from that exhibit, Bartholdi finally had enough capital to build the
statue’s head. He was so pleased with Philadelphia’s reception to the statue
that for a time he considered giving it to them instead of New York.
Hoax proved wrong…
Flair for exploitation
American showman Phineas
Taylor Barnum is remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxes as much as his
flair for exploiting the public's desire to be amazed. During an early
spectacle in 1835, he introduced Joice Heth as George Washington's 161-year-old
nursemaid: after her death, an autopsy revealed her to be no more than 80 years
old. In 1842, he unveiled his first major hoax, a creature with a body of a
monkey and the tail of a fish known as the "Feejee" mermaid in the
frame.
Random Trivia…
In 1945, a balloon bomb launched by Japan landed in Oregon. It
fell upon a woman and five children, who died when it exploded. These were the
only World War II casualties on US soil.
