My
Rambling Thoughts
Before leaving Belfast, I should mention that there are many
streets with wall murals talking about the human rights struggle. Interesting
to see a poster to free Leonard Peltier…and it was not an old mural either. Our
guide pointed out several times that the US and Ireland have a great history,
and this is the first time that we have gone this long without an American ambassador.
He blamed Obama, not realizing it was Congress.
Leaving Northern Ireland we drove to Drumcliffe to see WB Yeats
grave and a 15th c castle. Then it was down the coast through some
beautiful mountains and on to Ballynahinch Castle in Connemara where we stayed.
Later we learned about smoked salmon and the importance of buying only wild or
organic salmon. Then off to Kylemore Abbey, home to the Benedictine nuns. The
next day we are off to Killarney and the Cliffs of Moher. Beauty all around. We
took the Shannon Ferry from Kilimer to Tarbert to visit County Kerry. Then one
of the most beautiful rides through the Ring of Kerry, including a great
carriage ride from the town to Killarney National Park. The next day was
Blarney Castle where I stood in line about 45 minutes to kiss the Blarney
Stone. It is quick, but certainly memorable. At the last minute, just before my
turn, there is a sign that says remove glasses. I did and put them in one of
the many pockets on my safari jacket. After kissing the stone, I couldn’t find
the right pocket until I had climbed blindly down the tower. Had to sit on a
bench and unzip a lot of pockets to find them.
A story I didn’t follow here in AZ is dealing with the Navajo
Tribal Elections. One of the candidates is a young lawyer and former Marine
from near Page. He has freely admitted he is not fluent in his language but is
working on learning it. He was the second highest vote getter in the primary,
just before I left. Well the old guard is trying to get him disqualified because
he doesn’t speak Navajo fluently. It is in the courts and should be decided
soon. As a linguist I find this debate fascinating. If you can’t converse with
your elders, can you be their leader? Can one really understand the Dine’ way
if you don’t speak the language? Where will the young leaders come from if
speaking Navajo is a requirement? Also upsetting some traditionalists, he has a
well-known female educator as his running mate…which is seen as a taboo. From
what I read, it is opening a lot of controversy and most seem to be on one side
or the other, with few non-committal.
Rant on Apple. The new IOS8 took 3 hours to download on my iPhone,
and another 4 hours to download on my iPad. Did them separately to speed things
up.

John received a free ticket to the Super Bowl.
Unfortunately. John's seat was in the last row in the corner of the stadium. He
was closer to the Goodyear Blimp than the stadium. He noticed an empty seat 10
rows up from the 50-yard line. He decides to make his way to the empty seat. As
he sits down he asks the man next to him if anyone is sitting there. The man
told him no, it was empty. John is very excited to have a seat like this at a
Super Bowl and asks why in the world no one is using it? The man replied that
it was his wife's seat but she passed away. He said this was the first Super
Bowl that they have not attended together since they were married in 1968. John
said that it was really sad and asked if he couldn't find someone, a relative
or a close friend to take the seat?
"No" replied the man, "They're at her funeral!"

Really Happened
HAMILTON, Ontario (UPI) - A Canadian man accused of drunkenly
vandalizing a church and washing himself in holy water was arrested while
shirtless on the ground, police said. Police said the man and a woman entered
St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Hamilton, Ontario, and the visibly
intoxicated couple made a drunken scene. Police said the couple loudly used
profanity and the 26-year-old man washed himself in a large holy water bath
before they were scolded by a female church member who was inside the building
at the time. The couple left, but the man returned a short time later without a
shirt, police said. He allegedly poured wine on a rag and unsuccessfully attempted
to ignite it before throwing communion bread all over the facility and
allegedly stealing a rosary. The man was again escorted out of the church by
the female member, who called police. Officers found the man on the ground
outside the church, shirtless and wearing the stolen rosary. Police said the
man was "in an intoxicated state." The man was charged with mischief,
arson, damage to property, two counts of failing to comply with his probation,
theft and possession of stolen goods.
