Random Tidbits
Black
and orange are typically associated with Halloween. Orange is a symbol of
strength and endurance and, along with brown and gold, stands for the harvest
and autumn. Black is typically a symbol of death and darkness and acts as a
reminder that Halloween once was a festival that marked the boundaries between
life and death.
With
their link to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (a precursor to Halloween)
and later to witches, cats have a permanent place in Halloween folklore. During
the ancient celebration of Samhain, Druids were said to throw cats into a fire,
often in wicker cages, as part of divination proceedings.
Trick-or-treating
evolved from the ancient Celtic tradition of putting out treats and food to
placate spirits who roamed the streets at Samhain, a sacred festival that
marked the end of the Celtic calendar year.

My Rambling Thoughts
Warming
up a little, and I’m getting used to the fall temperatures. Not a lot of wind,
and not that cold last night.
In my
bedroom I have a lamp on a timer so that the light comes on from about 7p to 9p
every day. I change the exact time every so often. One can see the bedroom
light for the high staircase hall. It looks like someone is home, without
bothering me. My grandfather made the lamp out of some driftwood back in the
late 1960’s. I bought a 15w new-fangled spiral bulb when I moved in. Now some
12 years later it burned out. I had to really search for such a small wattage
bulb. Finally found one at Home Depot. Us older people look for light bulbs by
watts, not by lumens, so the search took a little longer than I wanted to spend
looking for a light bulb. Added to the search were the various kinds of light they
give off…soft white, natural, clear, and on and on and on. And trying to figure
out the way they sort the bulbs on display was beyond me. I wasn’t by
brightness, nor base size, nor number of bulbs in the package, nor anything
else I could think of. It reminded me more of the big bins that have bags of
various types of candy that the customer has to dig through to find what they
want. The light bulbs seemed to be randomly placed on the shelves. The new one says it will last 22 years, so things will have changed many times by then.
A lot
of Natives, environmentalists, and rural residents were against the Keystone
Pipeline. There were fears of devastation of when there was a leak. After years
and years of political arguing and court cases, President Trump approved the
Keystone Pipeline soon after he became President. Last week there was a leak in
North Dakota. 383,000 of oil junk leaked before it could be stopped. Hmmm.
Flagstaff’s
Winter Parking has begun. On Nov. 1 each year until May 1 there is no street
parking on any street within the city limits from 12midnight until 7am. It is in place so snow plows can clear roads
and/or street sweepers can pick up the cinders left by the snow plows. Tickets/towing only occur when it actually
snows. Life in a small town.
