Thoughts for the day
A nice winter day.
I’m still trying to understand the ramifications
of the recent Nat’l Weather Service announcement that this years moisture from
snow was 8.5” while the average is 58.7”. This is going to be a very difficult
fire season. The cuts the President has made to the firefighters is only going
to exacerbate the problem. I’m hoping for the best.
The world leaders are still trying to
understand the debacle in the Oval Office with Zelensky. Should they recognize that the US is no longer
going to help its allies or should they try to repair this alliance. It’s going
to be rough no matter which they decide to do.
Forgotten American Heros…
Harriet Jacobs
Harriet Jacobs was an African
American writer and abolitionist who escaped slavery and wrote an influential
autobiography, "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl."
Her firsthand account shed light on
the brutal realities of slavery, particularly for women. Jacobs' courage to
share her story brought greater awareness to the abolitionist cause.
Her legacy continues to influence
discussions on race, gender, and freedom. Jacobs’ narrative remains a powerful
testament to the enduring fight for human rights and the resilience of the
oppressed.
Common Misconceptions…
“I was a history major (mostly US
history). I always had the impression that Magna Carta was this
shining beacon of human rights which came down from the heavens and placed
immediate limits on royal power, but that really wasn't the case. The Pope
nullified it, and no one even paid attention to it until after King John's
death. It did not become known as the iconic charter it is today until
centuries later.”
Random Thoughts…
A Welsh king, Morgan of Gla-Morgan,
established trial by jury in 725 AD by declaring: “For as Christ and his 12
apostles were finally to judge the world, so human tribunals should be composed
of the king and 12 wise men.”
The Popeye’s restaurant chain was
named after Gene Hackman’s character in “The French Connection”
The McDonnell Douglas F-15 can reach
30,000 ft (9,100m) in 60 seconds and has a thrust-to-weight ratio that allows
the aircraft to accelerate while flying straight up. It is also the only
aircraft to ever shoot down a satellite orbiting in space.
There are some things money can’t buy,
for everything else, there’s money.
The chords to the AC/DC song “It’s a
long way to the top (if you wanna rock’n’roll)” are A, C, D, C.
The King’s Own Immemorial 1st Infantry
Regiment of the Spanish Army is claimed to be the oldest continuously operating
military unit in the world, formed in 1248.
