Random Tidbits
Because of Christmas's roots as an
ancient pagan holiday, the early American Puritans didn't originally take too
kindly to it. They believed that religion should be very solemn, so the
carol-singing, booze-drinking Christmas celebrations didn't sit well with them.
The Parliament of England, largely composed of Puritans, made the holiday
illegal in the 1600s, and the North American Puritans in New England followed
suit.
The law stuck as the New England
colonies evolved into the United States. The first state to actively legalize
Christmas was Alabama, and it wasn't until 1836! Christmas became a federal
holiday in 1870, but it was still illegal in some states. It wasn't until 1907
that Christmas was legal the United States over.

True Things
You
might associate St. Patrick’s Day with wearing green and drinking so much you
think you actually see leprechauns. However, until 1961, there were laws
in Ireland that banned bars to be open on March 17. Since the holiday
falls during the period of Lent in the heavily Catholic country, the idea
of binge drinking seemed a bit immoral.

My Rambling Thoughts
A
nice fall day, another day below 70 degrees, getting ready for a big drop late
Sunday or Monday.
Technology
is truly incomprehensible at times. Yesterday I couldn’t shut down my very slow
machine using the normal start button. I finally reached my frustration level
and simply pushed and held down the power button until it shut off. When I started
it this morning, whatever was using up my memory and slowing my computer had
disappeared and everything was working again. A miracle or something.
I
watched the last debate. I learned a couple of things. Trump is excellent at
taking things out of context. Trump was great ‘candidate’ but did not talk like
the incumbent. Trump thinks that separating over 500 children from their parents
is OK because they are being well treated. I am pleased that both guys were
civil. I doubt any minds were changed. I am now answering all those political
polls and focus group crap with ‘I voted early, please do not call again.’ It
is a lie, but I hope it works.
The
Colorado fires are difficult to watch. I’ve always been a bit envious of those
who live in or near one of the Colorado forests. So hard to watch the devastation.
Check a map to see how many of those forests are managed by the BLM or US Forest
Service. Where are the Feds when Colorado needs them?
I
am not Catholic, but it was good to see the Pope remind Christians that every
human is one of God’s children, and that Gays/Lesbians deserve civil unions. He
has been advocating that since he was a mere bishop, but his latest comment was
noticeably clear.
Our
discussion group is meeting tomorrow afternoon. It’s the first time since
March. We will be meeting outside, wearing masks, with distancing and
discussing ‘Red Sea Security’. Should be an new and interesting experiment. I have
a lot of reading to do before tomorrow at noon.
