Free Rambling Thoughts…
I took a
nice walk this morning, enjoyable before the afternoon rain.
Until
today, I just assumed that the US Embassy in Israel was in Jerusalem. It isn’t.
That helped explain the mess at the Democratic convention. It turns out the US
Embassy is in Tel Aviv because the US doesn’t feel Jerusalem is safe enough.
The President of the US has to review this decision every 6 months to determine
if it is still necessary to keep the Embassy out of the capital. This has been
going on since 1995. The Embassy has been in Tel Aviv since 1949. So I learned
something again today. Watching the Dem Convention, changing the platform by a
voice vote was certainly not what the Dems hoped for. Sure didn’t sound like a
2/3 voice vote to me, even after three voice votes. I figure this isn’t over…I’m
sure there will be something else ahead about the vote….or at least there
should be.
I watched
the Dem speeches last night. I’m glad that Michelle loves her husband, but
loving your wife doesn’t make you a good president. She is a very good speaker.
I need to hear a plan.

An absolutely perfect song for its circumstances. Named for the movie that it appeared in, it could not be sung by anyone else other than Boy George (If you haven’t seen the movie I won’t spoil it for you). The plaintive singing sets up perfectly the mood of the film as key plot points play out. At least this is what a lot of people think but the song was around for almost 30 years before the movie was named after the song and not the other way around. While emotional in its own way, I’m sure you’ll agree it has a very different feel that the more well-know 1992 version.

A defendant in a lawsuit involving large sums of money was talking to his lawyer. "If I lose this case, I'll be ruined." "It's in the judge's hands now," said the lawyer.
"Would it help if I sent the judge a box of cigars?"
"Oh no! This judge is a stickler or ethical behavior. A stunt like that would prejudice him against you. He might even hold you in contempt of court. In fact, you shouldn't even smile at the judge."
Within the course of time, the judge rendered a decision in favor of the defendant. As the defendant left the courthouse, he said to his lawyer, "Thanks for the tip about the cigars. It worked!"
"I'm sure we would have lost the case if you'd sent them."
"But, I did send them."
"What? You did?" said the lawyer, incredulously.
"Yes. That's how we won the case."
"I don't understand," said the lawyer.

SAN FRANCISCO - California-based financial company Visa said its survey indicates the "Tooth Fairy" left an average $3-per-tooth for U.S. children this year. Jason Alderman, Visa's senior director of global financial education, said the company's telephone survey of 2,000 U.S. adults indicates the amount of money left by the "Tooth Fairy" this year increased 15 percent over the average from 2011. "The Tooth Fairy may be the canary in the economic coal mine. She's showing signs of life by leaving 40 cents more per tooth this year," Alderman said. "This is not only good news for kids, but an ideal teachable moment for parents to engage their children in thinking about how to budget their windfall by saving a portion." The survey, conducted July 13-17, had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

- The first Avon Lady was no lady at all. It was David McConnell, a book salesman who gave small bottles of perfume to housewives who would allow him inside their homes to listen to his pitch. He soon realized that there was a market for door-to-door cosmetic sales, particularly in rural areas.
- On February 26, 1996, Elizabeth Taylor appeared on four different CBS sitcoms as a promotion for her then-new perfume, Black Pearls: Can't Hurry Love, High Society, Murphy Brown, and The Nanny.
- The first fragrance marketed exclusively for males was Estee Lauder's Aramis, which was launched in 1964.
- In the seventeenth century, most gentlemen kept perfume in the heads of their walking sticks. A quick whiff would ward off the nasty street smells of that era.
- Charisma Carpenter, who found fame first as a cheerleader for the San Diego Chargers and then on TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, was named after an Avon perfume (much to her alleged dismay).
- In 1979, Shelley Hack was tapped to replace Kate Jackson on Charlie's Angels based solely on her high profile as the spokesmodel for Revlon's Charlie perfume.
