I
had some great memories today. My dad passed away 17 years ago today. Can’t
believe it’s been that long. He had a great life and my brother and I still
miss him. Today is also the 40th anniversary of my joining the BIA.
That too was mostly good times. I still remember standing in a Gallup room with
about 15 other newbies, raising our right hand and taking the oath. I don’t
remember the oath, but I remember taking it. Then the long drive from Gallup to
Shonto in my lime-green Road Runner. Two of us were headed for the school. We
came across Hopi, turned at Tuba, drove for a long time, turned at the Shonto
sign, drove more, and came to the 8 mile dirt road. Finally we got to the
school about 4:30. We were introduced to our new principal, a former Navy
officer who certainly ran a tight ship. We were quickly introduced to our supervisors,
then the principal took us to our ‘quarters’. He went to the first one, opened
the door and discovered someone already living there. I was assigned to be in
the one next door. There was one pay phone on campus, near the school so I
found that and called home to let my parents know I had made it successfully.
Back in those days I didn’t actually talk to my parents, but made a collect
call for ‘Dave Johnson’, a neighbor. My dad said Dave wasn’t home and they knew
I was safe. I then wrote a letter telling them about my journey. About 2 weeks
later I got a phone at my apartment and called and talked to them. I had no TV reception
for the first two years I was there. Wow…40 years…amazing.
The
DADT policy was ended yesterday….for the all the fear…the world has not ended,
the military hasn’t fallen into disarray. John McCain has not been on any news programs
tonight…hmmm.
Again
Obama is standing up for the middle class. He is asking that millionaires and
billionaires pay a percentage of taxes similar to middle class folks. How can this
be seen as a bad thing? I’m sure the Tea Party will find a way to make it bad,
but as a middle class person I think it is a real good idea. As a single person
I am already paying a higher percentage than married people. We should all be
treated equally.

many sites simply copy it and is therefore difficult to verify. Also for events
