Thoughts for the day

I’m still adjusting to the very cool morning temps. Weather guy says there will be snow here on Sunday. I missed the first snow while I was basking in the heat at the hacienda. Guess I’m ready for this one.

While I was watching TV last night, there were Christmas ads. Halloween was still happening. This is little more than corporate greed, I’m not a fan.

Trump is suing CBS and 60 Minutes for $10billion. He is upset over the Harris interview ran on 60 Minutes. Crazy

Ancient Roman Life

Being a chariot racer could earn someone big bucks

Did you know that most chariot racers were slaves? They didn’t want to quit the sport, however. It was actually the exact opposite. Each racer would receive a share of winnings if they were part of the victorious team. But that wasn’t all. It turned out that chariot racing betting was also very popular in Rome.

Racers would often place bets and walk away with big bucks at the end. What’s the twist? The best teams, the red and white ones, were the most successful and, therefore, could afford the best drivers.

Historic Events

1898 – Cheerleading was started at the University of Minnesota with Johnny Campbell leading the crowd in cheering on the football team with “Rah, Rah, Rah! Ski-u-mah, Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah! Varsity! Varsity! Varsity, Minn-e-So-Tah!”. Princeton had published cheers for the audience to chant as early as 1877. In 1903 the first cheerleading fraternity, Gamma Sigma, was founded. Women started being popular cheerleaders in the early 1920s.

1920 – Charlotte Woodward voted in Philadelphia. She was the only sill living member who attended the 1848 Seneca Falls Women’s Rights Convention.

1959 – Quiz show scandal – Twenty-One game show contestant Charles Van Doren admits to a Congressional committee that he had been given questions and answers in advance.

1960 – Penguin Books is found not guilty of obscenity in the trial R v Penguin Books Ltd, the Lady Chatterley’s Lover case.

1983 – President Reagan signed the bill establishing the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on the third Monday in January.
