My Rambling Thoughts
Smoke returned to our mountain town. Same fires as yesterday. Keeps everyone on our toes.
Great lunch with Cheryl and Mary today. Cheryl’s son and family are coming in sometime next week. She wishes it could be a longer visit, but will deal with the days she has with them. Mary is heading to Phx to sit in her pool. Then the following week Mary is headed to Oregon to the family summer beach house for the month. Her daughter and family just moved there, so she is spending some extra time. Mary’s son was on Ancestory.com and found that his 7 times great grandfather was the Jack Daniel of whiskey fame. His dad had always been very clear that the family name was Daniel and not the more common Daniels. Turns out there were lots of school discussions when the teacher and/or administration added the ‘s’ to Mary’s daughter and son. I get that. We had similar discussions when my name was listed as Frazier II instead of Frazier III. A long time ago, someone in BIA housing in Gallup sent a letter to Frazier II. I knew it was a rent raise that couldn’t happen until I signed for the letter. I refused it stating ‘no such person at this address’. About a week later a lady was in my office from Gallup with the letter, and she was very unhappy because she had to drive over to deliver it. I showed her my ID to prove that I was not Frazier II. I tried to explain to her that it was illegal to open a letter addressed to my father, who had passed about 5 years earlier. She didn’t get it, but left my office, went to a secretary, used her typewriter and retyped the letter. Then I gladly signed for it. She never let me forget it.
Speaking of the government, I got ‘my letter’ today that it is possible that my information was stolen in the recent OPM breech. More paperwork to fill out. And now free credit bureau checking begins. What a pain….just when my FICA score broke 810. Oh well.

Brain Teasers
(answers at the end of post)
Ms. Arroyo asked the class to see if they could find the sum of the first 50 odd numbers. As everyone settled down to their addition, Terry ran to her and said, "The sum is 2,500." Ms. Arroyo thought, "Lucky guess," and gave him the task of finding the sum of the first 75 odd numbers. Within 20 seconds, Terry was back with the correct answer of 5,625.

How does Terry find the sum so quickly?

…Unusual Fact of the Day…
Comic book publishing giants Marvel and DC can both churn out whiz-bang serialized adventures, but they disagree on one very important aspect of a super hero’s origin. Marvel sets all its characters in real cities (New York, Los Angeles, etc.). DC Comics, however, chooses to keep the fantasy alive with places like Batman’s Gotham City and Superman’s Metropolis.

Yep, It Really Happened
ADELAIDE, Australia (UPI) - An Australian doctor has warned against the dangers of so-called "skinny jeans," citing a patient who collapsed after a day of strenuous activity while wearing tight pants. Neurologist Thomas Kimber, of the Royal Adelaide Hospital, told the Australian Broadcasting Corp., on Tuesday that a 35-year-old woman from Adelaide was recently hospitalized after wearing skinny jeans. Kimber said the woman was helping a relative move and spent the day squatting to help them clean. "She noticed that her legs were becoming increasingly uncomfortable as the day went on [but] didn't really think much of it," Kimber said. The woman didn't notice anything was wrong until she fell on the sidewalk and couldn't get up again. "By this time it was dark and quite late at night and she was unable to stand up again, and really was there for some time before she could crawl to the side of the road, hail a cab and bring herself to the Royal Adelaide Hospital," Kimber said. The woman's legs were so swollen that hospital staff had to cut her jeans off of her body. She suffered severe muscle swelling and nerve compression and had to be treated with intravenous fluids. According to a Kimber's report of the incident, which was published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, the patient suffered compartment syndrome -- when increased pressure to body parts, particularly the leg or forearm, leads to muscle or nerve damage. "We believe it was the combination of the squatting and tight jeans that caused the problem," Kimber said in the report. The woman was unable to walk for several days but eventually made a full recovery. "The take home message I would like to leave people is if they are going to doing a lot of squatting ... wear something looser, with more elasticity perhaps," he added.

Somewhat Useless Information
While men tend to die earlier than women of natural causes, they also account for 94 percent of all on-the-job fatalities, even though they barely represent 50 percent of the U.S. workforce.
Men are also four times more likely than women to be murdered, and 10 times more likely to commit murder.

***
Worldwide, there are approximately 107 baby boys born for every 100 baby girls. Scientists believe the elevated birth rate in favor of boys may be linked to the higher mortality rates of boys in infancy and childhood.
The brains of adult men are about 10 percent larger in total size than the brains of women. Because men generally have a larger stature and more muscle mass than women, their brains require more neurons to control the body.

Brain Teasers Answers
The following pattern holds: The sum is equal to n x n, when n is the number of consecutive odd numbers, starting with 1. For example, the sum of the first 3 odd numbers is equal to 3 x 3, or 9; the sum of the first 4 odd numbers is equal to 4 x 4, or 16; the sum of the first 5 odd numbers is equal to 5 x 5, or 25; and so on.

All ‘data’ info is from the internet sites and is usually checked with at least one other source, but I have learned that every site contains mistakes and sadly once the information is out there, many sites simply copy it and is therefore difficult to verify. Also for events occurring before the Gregorian calendar was adopted [1582] the dates may not be totally accurate.
