Today’s Thoughts

The last few days have been cooler, and I’m enjoying it. Another late-night monsoon.

Many tourists seem to have a very narrow view of traveling. The Maui population, as with most of Hawaii are learning that the hard way. Yes, the Maui fires were devastating…but only on the entire island. One tourist stop, yes, but not the rest of the island. Both flights and cruises to Hawaii, are being cancelled by less knowledgeable tourists. Maui and Hawaii depend on tourism for much of their economy. All these cancellations are going to have long lasting effects on all of Hawaii. It is a shame.

A little more on last night’s monsoon. It was loud with heavy rain. About 9:30pm I got an alert on my phone that lightning strikes were 0.1miles from my townhouse, with the added alert to seek immediate shelter. I was already inside, but still a little unnerving.

Unique National Treasures for the US …

There's a Fair or Festival for Everything

It’s hard to beat a great state fair, from the butter cow at the Iowa State Fair to the 212-foot-tall Texas Star Ferris wheel at the State Fair of Texas. But Americans love to celebrate, so nearly every summer weekend, you’ll find festivals across the U.S. honoring everything from strawberries (California, Tennessee, Florida and more) to sand (Texas’ Port Aransas SandFest) to scarecrows (the St. Charles, Illinois, Scarecrow Fest).

The North Country Moose Festival (August 25–26) along the Vermont/New Hampshire border includes moose chili, a moose-calling contest, moose-watching tours and a barn dance, and the Tomato Art Fest in Nashville (August 11–12) gives the coolest possible nod to America’s favorite fruit/veggie.

Random Trivia…

Roman Emperor Gaius, also known as Caligula, made one of his favorite horses a senator. The emperor loved his horse, named Incitatus, so much that he gave him a marble stall, an ivory manger, a jeweled collar, and even a house! Caligula also allegedly planned to make his trusty steed Consul before his assassination.
