Random Tidbits
Cincinnati, Ohio, is
named after a great figure of Rome, Cincinnatus (519-438 B.C.). While plowing
his fields, he was made dictator and placed in charge of the war against the
Vosci and Aequi. He did the job in 16 days, left his powerful position, and
went back to the plow.
The word
"palace" comes from the Palatine Hill, where Augustus established the
emperors' tradition of building their palaces.

True conversations while flying
One day
the pilot of a Cherokee 180 was told by the tower to hold short of the active
runway while a DC-8 landed. The DC-8 landed, rolled out, turned around,
and taxied back past the Cherokee. Some quick-witted comedian in the DC-8 crew
got on the radio and said,
"What a cute little plane. Did you make it all by
yourself?"
The
Cherokee pilot, not about to let the insult go by, came back with a real
zinger: "I made it out of DC-8 parts.
Another landing like yours and I'll have enough parts for another one."

My Rambling Thoughts
Cooled
off a bit today…the wind continues.
Eye
appointment went well. Told every employee how I wished they would fix their
reminder machine. The receptionist said it was new. The tech I see said to talk
to the Dr. The Dr. said, no one tells me anything. The Dr. asked the scheduler.
She had a dumb look on her face and said, I don’t know, they are working on it.
I jumped in and said, “Yeah for 4 months.”. The Dr. left and she said, “we just
got new phones last week and it does take time.” Finally, I found the culprit,
and won’t forget.
Flagstaff
has had a homeless issue since I moved here full-time, and probably longer.
Sadly, most are Natives. Last week a local activist posted a picture of a homeless
Native who had been beaten up by 4 White guys. He told the activist he didn’t
report it to the police because they never do anything. The activist fixed his
wounds and gave him some food and water. The activist said that was the
problem, and that he and others had tried to remedy the situation in Flagstaff,
but all that happens is that there are meetings with the Navajo Civil Rights
committee, more meetings are planned and nothing changes. I’ve known of him for
a long time, and this time he was the angriest I had ever heard. A few days
later the police dept posted a rebuttal to his post, stating that they did have
contact with the victim after the beating. He was too inebriated to tell the
same story twice. Yesterday the activist posted again, saying that the police
were just covering. I know from bitter experience that some Navajo families
have a history of alcohol abuse. I also know that Navajo families take care of
their family members. In this time of
waking up to social injustice it is time to clearly define border town responsibilities
for homeless Natives…as well as all homeless people. Right now, many in
Flagstaff simply put all the homeless in a little box of: alcoholic and/or
mentally ill. And decide that it is not their responsibility to find solutions.
Sad. Now is the time.
