Thoughts
A really windy day here in
Flag. Glad I ran a few errands this morning, as this afternoon was windy,
rainy, and cloudy. The rain was certainly nice…about 30 minutes, even with the strong winds. We are expecting more rain
and maybe even snow by the weekend.
The Trayvon case is moving
along. Charges and an arrest. Now it looks like the justice system will play
out. I was listening to TV when the news broke. The special prosecutor sure had
her act together—justice for Travyon. It was interesting to listen to Rev. Al
Sharpton who compared this to a baseball game…saying that they are at first base. He also thanked everyone for their
non-violent responses in marches and petitions. Both parents said that all they
ever wanted was an arrest and a trial. Again talking about letting the system
work through this. Then one of Zimmerman’s friends used a football analogy
saying that the system had kicked the ball, and they are now ready for a long
touchdown run to innocence. I sure hope, for sanity, that the system works.
Stand Your Ground will certainly be in the news throughout the trial.
I’m sure all states with
such a law will begin a public service campaign to explain what one can and can’t
do. AZ has open carry laws and stand your ground.

NEW YORK - A New York man marked his 102nd
birthday surrounded by friends in the neighborhood where he has worked as a
valet for 25 years. Joe Binder, valet at Mario's Restaurant on Arthur Avenue,
said his long life might be a result of being "very nice to people"
-- and not having any children may be "one of the reasons I've stayed
stress-free," the New York Post reported Monday. "I still drive
locally and I just renewed my license so I'm good until I turn 110 years
old," Binder said. Binder, whose birthday was celebrated by his Arthur
Avenue neighbors Sunday with a huge banner stretched across the street, said he
was lucky to have made so many friends during his years working for Mario's.
"Sometimes I think I'm dreaming when I think of how many people love and
care for me here on Arthur Avenue," he said. Binder said his 48-year-old
girlfriend helps keep him young. "There's no sex involved, just
companionship," he said, listing dancing as one of their most frequent
activities.

Research by University of
Wisconsin neuroscientist Richard Davidson has shown that experienced mediators
exhibit high levels of gamma wave activity and display an ability to not get
stuck on a particular stimulus. That is, they're automatically able to control
their thoughts and reactiveness.
A 2005 study on American
men and women who meditated a mere 40 minutes a day showed that they had
thicker cortical walls than non-mediators. What this meant is that their brains
were aging at a slower rate.
