English Muffin
In 1880, a man named
Samuel Thomas moved to New York from England and opened his own bakery. He was
used to making crumpets in England, which are very similar to English muffins
except they are typically smaller and eaten whole. Thomas started making a
brand-new recipe called Nooks & Crannies, which were larger and meant to be
cut in half and toasted. Today, we know them as Thomas’ English Muffins. They
have been an American favorite for 140 years.
Yes, English is in the
name, and yes, they were made by an Englishman, but they were invented after he
moved to America. Officially, English muffins were invented in New York City.

My Rambling Thoughts
Slight breeze and dark clouds helping with the heat.
There was a short monsoon shower yesterday. Hoping for more moisture today.
I watched my Sunday news programs; but was not getting
very informed. Seems every one of them spent most of the time on Covid with
little new information. One show did interview Sec. of Education DeVos. She would
not answer any questions directly, but was very good at saying how every
American wants the schools to fully open this fall. She said states and
districts should set safety standards. She kept repeating that the CDC only put
out guidelines. She would not answer the question about her department stop Federal
Funding for districts that did not have open schools. Scary and depressing at
the same time.
I grew up in Colorado. While in public school I learned
about Kit Carson. I was also a Cub Scout and Boy Scout for years. When I
started working on the Rez, a Boy Scout rep came to the school to see if we
would start a program at the school. I was surprised that our school was in the
Kit Carson District in AZ. Especially since I knew that Kit Carson was following
orders when he led the removal of Navajo on the Long Walk. The school decided
not to start a troop at the school because of the cost to the sponsors to start
up a troop and the cost to individual scouts for uniforms, books, etc. When I was
attending NAU, there was an inexpensive trailer park close to the University
called Kit Carson RV Park. It is still operating. This last week a petition was
started to change the name of the RV Park, because of the ol’ Kit did. It is a
small, privately owned park. Many in Flagstaff have taken sides on social
media. I have no idea how this will turn out, but lines have been drawn and
opinions are gathering on both sides. One side sees it as ‘cancel culture’ going
too far, the other side saying he should not be honored.
