Yesterday’s
monsoon brought more moisture. Enjoyable rain.
The
HOA grounds keepers are here cleaning up the parking lot and fronts of each unit.
Nice to get rid of the pine needles.
I
stopped at Walgreen’s after getting a text that two prescriptions were ready.
They only had one ready and the other one will be ready tomorrow. I showed them
the text. They couldn’t explain it. Oh Well.

Statue of Liberty …
5. The
Statue of Liberty also nearly went to Boston.
In
1882, when the statue was well under construction in Paris, but fundraising
efforts were stalling in New York, Boston made a play to get the statue.
Proving that nothing motivates New Yorkers so well as rivalry, the New
York Times retorted in an editorial:
“[Boston]
proposes to take our neglected statue of Liberty and warm it over for her own
use and glory. Boston has probably again overestimated her powers. This statue
is dear to us, though we have never looked upon it, and no third rate town is
going to step in and take it from us. Philadelphia tried to do that in 1876,
and failed. Let Boston be warned . . . that she can’t have our Liberty ... that
great light-house statue will be smashed into ... fragments before it shall be
stuck up in Boston Harbor.”
Hoax proved wrong…
Dutch painter Han van Meegeren
is considered to be one of the most ingenious art forgers of the 20th century.
Born in 1889, van Meegeren managed to dupe some of the sharpest art critics and
expert art historians of the day by forging paintings of some of the world’s
most famous artists, including Pieter de Hooch and, notably, Johannes Vermeer.
Random Trivia…
Roman gladiators often became celebrities and even endorsed
products! Children would even play with gladiator ‘action figures’ made of
clay. Also, their sweat was considered an aphrodisiac, and women would mix it
into their skincare products.
