Rambling Thoughts
A bit windy for my taste today, still a nice day. I keep hoping
the security door will arrive soon.
I am getting a little tired of the news cycle on the Clippers
owner. Both CNN and Barbara Walters are claiming ‘exclusive’ interviews with
the crazy old guy. He is doing himself no favors by being interviewed. The guy
is only digging himself deeper into a hole he created. I still have a problem
with the way the tapes were released to the public…somebody made big bucks. Had
the tapes never surfaced, he would not be in the media frenzy and in the NBA crosshairs.
Seems to me that the NBA should do a whole lot more vetting before they allow
new owners…or is the NBA an organization that just wants money? I did learn
that the LA Clippers started out as the Buffalo (NY) Braves back in the 70’s.
They were owned by the movie mogul Irv Levin, who sold the team to the
current owner. I’m only a basketball fan during the playoffs so some new
knowledge is probably common knowledge to true basketball fanatics.

Largest Rodent in the World: The Capybara
The largest living rodent is the capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris),
native to most of the tropical and temperate parts of South America east of the
Andes, always near water. Full-grown capybaras can reach 1.5 m (4.9 ft) long
and 0.9 m (3.0 ft) tall at the shoulder and a maximum weight of 105.4 kg (232
lb). It is a highly social species and can be found in groups as large as 100
individuals, but usually live in groups of 10–20 individuals.

Yew
This incredible yew resides in a small churchyard of St. Dygain's
Church in Llangernyw village, north Wales. About 4,000 years old, the
Llangernyw Yew was planted sometime in the prehistoric Bronze Age — and it's
still growing! In 2002, in celebration of the golden jubilee of Queen Elizabeth
II, the tree was designated as one of 50 Great British trees by the Tree Council.

NORTH CONWAY, N.H. (AP) — Wildlife officials in New Hampshire
believe a bear is to blame for a series of recent car break-ins. The New
Hampshire Fish and Game Department says several cars have been broken into over
the last few weeks in the same North Conway neighborhood. Officials say the
likely culprit is a bear looking for food.

"Mothering
Sunday" dates back to the 16th century and is considered a precursor to
the modern Mother's Day. It was observed on the fourth Sunday of Lent in Europe
when people returned to their "mother church" and it evolved to
include secular observances honoring mothers.
Anna
Jarvis is considered the found of Mother's Day in the United States when she
sought in 1908 to honor her mother, who had died three years prior and who had
organized "Mothers' Friendship Day" in 1868 to promote reconciliation
following the end of the Civil War.
President
Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation making Mother's Day a national holiday in
1914.
Jarvis
was not a life-long supporter of the holiday because she disliked the
commercialization that surrounded it. Around 1920 she starting urging people to
stop buying flowers and cards for their mothers. Jarvis was even arrested
protesting Mother's Day and said that she regretted creating the holiday. She
eventually tried to have Mother's Day abolished.
People
spend $1.9 billion annually on flowers for Mother's Day and 69% of all gifts
given are flowers.
