Random Tidbits

The giving of May Baskets has, sadly, faded since the late 20th century. Small baskets of sweets and flowers would be left anonymously on doorsteps to the delight of neighbors.

In the late 19th century, leaders of the socialist Second International were fighting for an eight-hour work day and they called for a global day of protest to be held on May 1, 1890. It has lived on as an international workers' day, and has received renewed vigor in the United States.

The international distress signal, "mayday," has nothing to do with the first of May. It derives from the French venez m'aider, meaning "come help me."

My Rambling Thoughts

Friday is another great weather day. I got up early, took a walk then headed out for my weekly shopping. When I first got to the Rez to teach, the only shopping any of us could do was on the weekend...the nearest grocery store was 125 miles away. It's take this pandemic to remind me that it is possible to shop only one day a week. The differences from then and now include: it doesn't take a full tank of gas to shop today...back then I didn't need a mask and gloves to go shopping...now I don't need to carry an ice chest to get stop the fresh food from spoiling.

As an adopted baby, I catch adoption news. Yesterday in Arkansas, a 2-year-old was legally adopted over Zoom. The new parents had been caring for the child for over a year. The official ceremony took place over the internet. Cool.

An NAU professor has a grant to study Covid-19 in wastewater here in Flagstaff. The hope is that this will help identify possible hot spots. Very cool, but not a job I would want.

Nebraska touted that there were no positive Covid-19 tests in their prison system. An astute journalist followed up and found out that Nebraska has not conducted any Corona19 tests in its entire prison system. I guess they believe that if you don't test, then you don't have any cases.

Just got word that a friend from Tuba, her daughter, and her daughter's boyfriend are all on ventilators in Tucson from this pandemic. The friend is in her 60's, the others in their early 30's. Sad.
