Today’s Thoughts
The
weatherman keeps saying that the current very early monsoon is not any indication
of rain during the expected summer monsoon.
The
Nuggets beat the Lakers in game one of their series. Nuggets look very good
this year.
There
are new 3D photos of the entire Titanic wreckage. It has taken a couple of
years to take photos deep in the ocean. Now everyone can see the wreckage in
3D. It is amazing to see and may help scientists figure out more about the
actual sinking.
Joe
Biden is heading for the G-7 conference in Japan. He had planned to stop in New
Guinea on this trip. It would be the first time any US President had visited
any island in the region. The local government had declared a National Holiday
on the day of his visit. He planned to stop there to build stronger relations
with many governments in the area. China has been busy building relations in this
important strategic area. However, he had to cancel that part of his trip to
deal with the pending debt ceiling crisis. It is a shame that international
relations are being hurt because Congress can’t do one of its most important jobs
without the President holding their hand.
I
remember the song The Lion Sleeps Tonight from my younger days. I was surprised
to hear it when I was South Africa at the “Walk with the Lions” venue and while
waiting to for the real walk with lions, the venue was playing it. Check out
this great rendition: The Lion Sleeps
tonight

Origins of State Names
New York
For a brief time in the 1600s, the city
nicknamed the Big Apple was named after an entirely different fruit. In 1664,
the British took power of the region of New Amsterdam and renamed it New York
after King Charles I’s son, the Duke
of York. However, for a short time, the city was
actually called New
Orange. In 1673, the Dutch regained control of the
state and named it after the Dutch Prince of Orange. The following year,
however, the British repossessed the region and renamed it New York for good,
which later gave its name to the entire state. Yes, it’s hard to imagine Frank
Sinatra singing “New Orange, New Orange,” but for a brief moment in history
that was almost a reality.
