Rambling Thoughts
Our fire just keeps growing, as predicted. It is now close to
14,000 acres. It is in its 5th day and Flag has had heavy smoke most
of those days. Thankfully no structures have been lost. There are nearly 1000
on the front line. While we are devastated by the mess, we are lucky compared
to other areas. There is a 125,000 acre fire in Alaska and a 43,000 acre fire
on the San Carlos Reservation down south. Neither seems to be getting the press
coverage…probably because Oak Creek and Sedona have been tourist destinations
for decades.
Monday is Memorial Day, or as previous generations called it—Decoration
Day. This holiday started during the
Civil War to honor all Americans who have died while in the military service. I
know a few who were lost in various wars throughout my life…Korea, Viet Nam, Iraq,
Afghanistan. It is very sad to see how such a loss changes the family and friends
of those who knew the soldier who died. Our family flag will be out all day
tomorrow to honor those who died serving our country.

Things That Washed Up On Beaches…
4 - A
Giant Crocodile Head
A couple walking their dogs along a beach in South Africa stumbled
across a gruesome find one morning in early 2013: the perfectly intact head of
a giant crocodile. The rest of the fearsome reptile, which could have been well
over ten feet long in total, was conspicuously absent. Speculation as to what
separated the croc’s head from its body ran the gamut from poachers to a hippo,
but most experts ultimately agreed that a losing encounter with a massive great
white shark was the likely culprit.

Really Happened
PORTLAND, Ore. (UPI) - An Oregon woman's car was attacked last
week by a 30-year-old man who told police that he was battling "the evil
Morgoth." Morgoth is an evil character created by J.R.R. Tolkien who is
featured in the "Lord of the Rings" books. Konrad Bass was allegedly
high on LSD when he used a sword to attack a woman's car and puncture it. Bass
was wearing chain-mail with a helmet and carrying a shield during the attack,
but the woman was apparently unable to recognize his costume and told a 911
dispatcher that "a pirate" was attacking her car. Bass told police he
was a "high-elf engaged in the battle with the evil Morgoth," not a
pirate, according to KATU. He also had a staff on him at the time of the
attack. Paramedics brought Bass to the hospital after the incident and he now
faces charges of disorderly conduct, criminal mischief and menacing, KPTV
reported.
