Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

and chilly. The storm left and was a bust. Barely enough snow yesterday to
cover the ground. I had an early follow-up at my PCP. All good. It was 28° when
I had to leave. The remote start and the heated seats sure make early morning
drives nice. There was still ice on the roads, and I twisted a knob and had all
4 wheels helping me…it was great!
I
had no problem getting my Moderna booster yesterday. My arm is a little tender
but nothing else. Good news, the new booster didn’t require me to wait 15
minutes before leaving the store. Since my 1st card was filled, I
now get to carry 2 cards with me. Too bad the card maker didn’t have psychic
powers and make more space on the original card.
Good
to see that Mr. Pelosi is home to recover. It shows the downside of ‘Freedom of
Speech’ which has become ‘Freedom of Conspiracy Theories’ in this case.
I
was listening to NPR. There was an update on Ethiopia. I was there in 2011 with
Focus Travel. Both parties have signed an agreement to stop the civil war they
have had for over a decade. Parts of the fighting zone has had no humanitarian
aide for the last 60 days. Such a disheartening series of events for such a
beautiful country.

"Jessica" by The Allman Brothers Band (1973)
This is an
Allman Brothers Band classic, thanks to the brilliance of guitarist Dickey
Betts, who composed the tune. A little more than seven minutes long on the
band's Brothers and Sisters album, Betts named the song for his then-infant
daughter. Over the years, the track has been covered numerous times and
appeared in movies such as Field of Dreams.

Running amok
You know when things get a little wild,
crazy, or out of control. The word Amok comes from the Amuco, a band of
Javanese and Malay warriors who would go on killing sprees for unknown reasons.
There was believed to be some sort of mental condition afflicting those
peoples.
Captain James Cook wrote about it in
1772: “To run amok is to … sally forth from the house, kill the person or
persons supposed to have injured the Amock, and any other person that attempts
to impede his passage.”

Events
1605 – Gunpowder Plot – an attempt to
blow up the English Parliament. The plot discovered and leader Guy Fawkes was
tortured and later executed. He was caught with 36 barrels of gunpowder at the
House of Lords.
1639 – First post office in the colonies
was set up in Massachusetts, with permission from King William and Queen Mary.
The United States Post Office (USPO) was created on July 26, 1775, by decree of
the Second Continental Congress.
1852 – American Society of Civil
Engineers and Architects was founded.
1895 – Patent attorney George B. Selden
of Rochester, New York, received the first US patent (#549,160) for a
gasoline-driven automobile.
1935 – Parker Brothers launched the board
game of Monopoly. Marvin Gardens is actually a misspelling of ‘Marven Gardens’,
an actual locale in Atlantic City.
1956 – The Nat King Cole Show debuted on
NBC. It was the first variety program to be hosted by an African American. The
last episode of The Nat King Cole Show aired on December 17, 1957.
1959 – American Football League (AFL) was
announced, with 8 teams – The New York Titans, Boston Patriots, Buffalo Bills,
Houston Oilers, Los Angeles Chargers, Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, and Dallas Texans.
2007 – The Android mobile phone operating
system was unveiled by Google.
2009 – US Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan
(US Army Medical Corps) killed 13 and wounded 43 at Fort Hood, Texas in the
largest mass shooting ever at a US military installation. Although it has been
officially labeled as workplace violence, many people consider it an act of
terrorism.
2013 – India launched the Mars Orbiter
Mission, its first interplanetary probe.
