Tidbits
People often think of
American lagers or Belgian ales when they think of beer, but there are many
types of beer, such as sorghum-based African opaque beer, Japanese sake (which
is not wine, but a rice beer), Russian kvass made from bread, and corn-based South
American chicha.
You can go swimming in a
pool of beer at the Schloss Starkenberger brewery in Tarrentz, Austria. The
sudsy bath is said to promote healthy skin.

Rambling Thoughts
Thursday has turned into a very windy day. Thankful there is no
sand.
Travel, as we all know, is difficult. Ireland is still welcoming
Americans…as long as they quarantine for 10 days after arrival. They like
Americans, and of course their tourist $$$, and they want everyone to be safe.
If you must stay in a hotel, this makes the trip much more expensive.
Covid has messed up many things. Now the Census Bureau is going to
stop counting people a month earlier than expected. Why? They say it is to meet
Trump’s deadline of a count by the end of this calendar year. Trump is so good with
Executive Orders, if the census were important to him, he could simply extend
his deadline. Everyone knows it takes longer to count Americans who are homeless,
rural Americans, and American minorities. The census sets so much, this is
disgusting.

Events
1782 – George Washington ordered the creation of the Badge of
Military Merit to honor soldiers wounded in battle. It was later renamed the
Purple Heart.
1909 – Alice Huyler Ramsey and three other
women became the first women to complete a transcontinental automobile trip,
taking 59 days to travel from New York, New York to San Francisco, California.
Alice drove the whole trip.
1930 – Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith, two accused African-American
criminals were taken from jail by a mob and lynched. Lawrence Beitler took a
picture of the mob and bodies, inspiring Abel Meeropol to write a poem, “Bitter
Fruit.” It was later rephrased as “Strange Fruit” and recorded by Billie
Holiday.
1944 – IBM announced the first program-controlled calculator, the
Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator, known best as the Harvard Mark I. It
used 765,000 components and hundreds of miles of wire and weighed about 5 tons.
1955 – Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering (became Sony in 1958)
sold its first transistor radios in Japan.
1959 – The Lincoln Memorial design on the U.S. penny went into
circulation. It replaced the “wheat” design and was minted until 2008.
1974 – Philippe Petit walked an illegal tightrope between the twin
towers of the World Trade Center.
1978 – The US Government made funds available to offer federal
assistance for the Love Canal Disaster
