My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

It’s been a busy day.

My parents and Jeffco schools taught me the importance of ‘the principle’ over money.

I put a package on hold with UPS while I was in Mexico. UPS then promptly charge me $7.99 for the hold. Then they lost the package. I called and the vendor sent a new one 2-day air after I got home. It arrived fine. Between my time on the UPS website and finally on the phone it took over an hour to get my $7.99 refund. I did the survey at the end and let them know that my time is more valuable than the $7.99/hour but I refused to let them know I didn’t appreciate losing my package and then spending an hour to get the hold refund. I’m sure they are sending my complaint to all those involved, and a team is working on fixing their much too complicated processes. NOT!

Little known Native American History

Little Tree wasn't who you think

Countless Americans grew up reading The Education Of Little Tree. Said to be a memoir of Forest Carter's childhood living with his Cherokee grandmother and part-Cherokee grandfather, the book was praised for decades, taught in schools, and even recommended by Oprah. However, in 1991 historian Dan T Clark proved in the New York Times what many had long suspected, the book was a hoax written by Asa Carter, a white supremacist, and one-time Klu Klux Klan member.

Slang Origins

1923: Flapper

Meaning: a young woman in the 1920s who showed freedom from conventions and societal norms

The iconic image from 1920s America, “flappers” conjure an image of women in makeup and bobbed hair driving automobiles or dancing in a speakeasy. While this might be the most striking image of the American "Roaring ‘20s," the slang is actually imported from the British. There, young women briefly wore rubber galoshes left open to flap around, which let to the coinage of the term.
