Thoughts for the day
Earlier the sun was shining, now it is overcast and look like rain.
My brother sent me a listing for the house we grew up in. In 1954 my parents bought the brand new house
with an unfinished yard and basement for $13,950. My parents lived there for
almost 45 years. My dad, my maternal grandfather, his friends and neighbors finished
the basement, built a patio, dug several different wells over time, and added a
half-court basketball court. It is on the market for $635,000 and just closed.
The various owners have really changed the place that I can’t even recognize
either the outside or the inside anymore.
Trump wants a 6600-troop parade with tanks and other military vehicles
for his birthday parade. This is not the America I know.
This too is scary: 45% of Americans gave Trump an ‘F’ on his first
hundred days. I sure hope that doesn’t mean he has to repeat his first 100
days.
Ancient Civilizations Few Have Heard Of…
The Epirote Greeks:

This one on the list, often
overshadowed by Sparta and Athens, was famed for its warrior culture. King
Pyrrhus, one of their most famous rulers, led them in costly victories against
the Romans. His "Pyrrhic victory" became a term for success at an
unreasonably high cost.

·
“Warp Factor” in Star Trek refers to a cubic function
of the speed of light, so while Warp 1 is the speed of light, Warp 2 is 8 times
the speed of light, Warp 3 is 27, and Warp 10 is 1000 times the speed of light.

A group of Nouns is called a Collective.
·
An “initialism” is a type of acronym that cannot be
pronounced as a word but must be read letter-by-letter, like FBI or UCLA.
·
Before the English-speaking world was exposed to the
fruit, the color orange was referred to as “geoluhrea” which is the old English
term for red-yellow.
·
The names of the two stone lions in front of the New
York Public Library are Patience and Fortitude. They were named by then-mayor
Fiorello LaGuardia.
Misunderstood History…
Napoleon Wasn’t Short ©Wikimedia
Napoleon is often mocked as a tiny dictator with a
"short man complex." But at 5’6”, he was actually average height for
Frenchmen of his time. British propaganda exaggerated his height to make him
seem weak and ridiculous.
The confusion comes from differences between French and British measurement
systems. He wasn’t short—he was just the victim of a smear campaign.
