Trivia
Horizontal gaming wheels, such as those used in
roulette, were invented in England in 1720 for a game called roly-poly. Roly-poly was similar to
roulette, except there were no numbers on the wheel. There were alternating
white spaces and black spaces, along with a "bar black" space and a
"bar white" space. The "bar" spaces were the equivalents
of zero and double-zero -- if the ball landed in either space, bets on black
or white lost. Roly-poly was banned in England in 1745, but the horizontal
wheel traveled well. By 1796, modern roulette was being played in France. The kings in decks of playing cards represent real leaders and conquerors from history, although not all had the title of king. The deck we use today is based on cards designed in 15th-century France. The king of spades represents the Biblical King David, the king of clubs represents Alexander the Great, the king of hearts represents Charlemagne and the king of diamonds represents Julius Caesar. |
My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts
A nice fall day with a blue sky. Faith and
Andy called this morning…they are on their way to Indiana and beyond for
Thanksgiving. I’ll check on their place while they are gone. Atlanta
Airport shut down after ‘accidental discharge of weapon’. Huge delays at this
major hub. What has
happened to Peng Shuai, the Chinese Tennis player. She has been wiped from
the Chinese Internet after accusing a former VP of sexual assault. China
media says she is fine. No one outside China knows where she is. A sad state
of affairs. Colorado Buffs
are beating the Washington Huskies…early in the 2nd Q. I’ve been
thinking about the Riddenhouse verdict. I get that if you are attacked you
need to protect yourself. I still don’t get that if you are attacked while
carrying a loaded AR-15 assault rifle on public streets that are in chaos,
you can shoot and kill anyone who attacks you. Would he have been attacked if
he hadn’t had the rifle? This seems like a return to the Wild West days of
vigilante justice. I sure hope not. The
Troubled Teen industry is a cash cow for its owners. Most of these places
charge huge amounts of money to desperate parents who want to help their
child. These privately owned facilities have no license requirements, no
regulations that require certified professionals to be working with these
troubled teens. Some facilities are run by churches, some by private people.
Many of their advertising brochures have beautiful pictures of the area,
without showing the less than hospitable facility. Adults, who were teens
when sent to these places are now coming out and telling of the sometimes
barbaric conditions they endured. Without some kind of oversite by qualified
people, this will only continue. Sad. |
