Random Tidbits
While European chivalry
has its roots in feudalism in France and Spain, some scholars believe it is
nothing more than the continuation of al-furusiyya al-arabia, or Arabian
chivalry, which was imported to Europe during the early Crusades. The
knight-errantry, the riding on horseback to find adventure, the rescue of a
maiden in need, the nobility of women, and the connection of honorable conduct
with the horse rider are all traceable to Arabia.
The term
"chivalry" is from the Latin word caballus, meaning "nag,
pack-horse," and is related to the word "cavalier."
A Little Something to Think About
If a weightlifter lifts weights, what does a shoplifter lift?
If a cow is unable to produce milk, is it a milk dud or an udder
failure?

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts
My old computer is working today. I got my second Moderna vaccine about
9:30. It almost 1pm and no reaction. I thank FEMA and Coconino County for an
extremely easy procedure. It took longer to drive to the fairgrounds than to do
the shot. I’m very happy I have internet access as that was the only way to get
an appointment. There are lots of people in the county who don’t have internet.
The Rez people are getting their vaccine through Indian Health Service [even the
Non-Natives], but others in rural areas are having difficulty setting up
appointments. The digital divide has been around for decades now and still has
not been solved. That should be unacceptable.
The AZ-GOP will not accept the election. The state party filed a
lawsuit against Maricopa County (Phx area) over not counting ballots properly.
The court threw out the case and is making the party pay $18,500 to the county
for court expenses.
It looks like the CDC is ready to cut the distance from 6’ to 3’ to
avoid the virus. That is certainly good news as schools are opening. The 6’
rule made it almost impossible to open classrooms. The 3’ rule will be a doable
challenge.
I am saddened by the deaths of 8 Asian Americans. I am angry that a
couple of US elected Reps and some of the top cops in that county don’t find it
as something that needs to be fixed. Everyone I know has a bad day, every so
often. That includes me. No one I know has decided to kill 8 people to make the
day better. This, like so many other cases, involves mental health. Way back,
the answer was the insane asylum. They have been closed on humanitarian grounds.
While closing them was a popular idea, the idea that mental health still needed
to be addressed was not on the radar. I wonder when the time will come to face
mental health as a crisis. I truly believe that no person chooses to be mentally
ill. I also believe that the vast majority of those with mental illness did not
cause it and did not choose to be mentally ill. The many stigmas need to be
removed so the mentally ill will seek help.
When I arrived in Shonto, AZ in 1971 on the Navajo Reservation, iIt
was about 5 miles from the junction of US160 and AZ98. Then there was 8 miles
of dirt road to get to the school. Today I saw the drawings of a new motel that
will be built at the junction of 160 & 98. It will be a La Quinta Inn &
Suites. Groundbreaking is set for April. It will be virtual on FB, due to Covid.
