My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

Monsoon has returned. My place had a nice rain for about an hour. No extra charge for the very close lightning and thunder.

I’m a tad baffled: The Justice Department is only asking for $2000 fine for felony convictions and $590 for misdemeanor cases for the Jan. 6th incident at the capitol. That will bring a maximum of $1.5 million while the total cost to taxpayers is about $500 million. It sounds to me like that will do more to encourage that behavior, rather than stop it. I’m sure historians will have a lot more to say in the future.

Gov. Cuomo has resigned. It begins in 14 days. His resignation does not prevent the many lawsuits from proceeding. I hope the women get justice for what they endured.

The long-awaited UN report of climate change and the state of the planet is a very dim outlook. I sure hope people with power take action on the recommendations…like today.

The Watts Riots began on August 11, 1965, when African-American Marquette Frye was convicted of drunk driving and driving. Because it was racially motivated violence by the minicabs, the mob turned violent, throwing rocks and other objects as they shouted at the police.

The Fryes’ arrest and Watts’ deterioration led to violent riots in the neighborhood, the first of its kind in Los Angeles. Six days of violence left 34 dead, caused property damage worth more than $40 million, and ended with more than 1,000 injured and more than 4,000 arrests.
