Free Rambling Thoughts:   

An interesting day. Yesterday I somehow chipped a molar, and not when I was eating. Strange. Off to the dentist this morning. This is one of the teeth he said would need a crown. Luckily, it was a small chip, so tomorrow I’m off to the dentist again for the temporary crown. Not my idea of fun, but much better than have the tooth completely breaking….that already happened once and I don’t want to do that again.

 

Talked to my brother today and got several text messages…they are fine…waiting out the storm at their home in Brooklyn. Hopefully the surge won’t affect them, but they do live a few blocks from a river. What a horrific storm. Just a reminder that Mother Nature still has a lot of control over our lives.

 

Got a call today about my Uganda trip. Everything is set. We are also doing a desert camel ride to a Bedouin village for a dinner. That will happen in Dubai, just a reminder that indigenous people still live a short distance from this very modern and expensive city. Also found out that our gorilla visit is in the area where Dian Fossey did some of her study. She is the American zoologist who worked to save the gorilla and was killed in Rwanda by gorilla poachers. I also found out that Hamdy’s daughter will be joining us on our trip. That too will be nice.

Yeah, It Really Happened

It was just a normal afternoon on a golf course in San Juan Capistrano, California when club employees had to rescue golfers from a shark which had apparently dropped out of the sky and flopped around on the 12th tee.

San Juan Hills Golf Club operations director Melissa McCormack says a course marshal found the leopard shark and brought it to the clubhouse. It had puncture wounds where it appeared a bird had snagged it from the Pacific Ocean, about five miles away.

They stuck shark into fresh water before somebody remembered it came from the sea, so they got some sea salt from the kitchen and mixed it in (ideally with some hot oil, lemon and cilantro in a cast iron pan).

Another employee rushed the shark to the ocean where McCormack says it was very still for a few seconds before twisting around and speeding off.

• THE LIGHTHOUSE OF ALEXANDRIA…
The very first lighthouse, it guided ships to the port of Alexandria (named for, and by, Alexander the Great) using a constantly burning fire that was reflected out to sea by a large mirror. The lighthouse was damaged by an earthquake in 1303 CE and collapsed soon after.

• THE HANGING GARDENS OF BABYLON…Created by King Nebuchadnezzar II, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were built atop cube-shaped columns, and comprised dozens of high, beautifully landscaped terraces. The green-thumbed touches all gave Babylon the illusion of topography, which was exactly the point: Supposedly, Nebuchadnezzar’s wife was homesick for the mountainous land of her childhood, so he built them to cheer her up.

• THE COLOSSUS OF RHODES…Another Greek statue passing as a wonder of the world because it was built by Greeks? Well, yes. In 282 BCE, the people on the island of Rhodes erected a 110-foot bronze monument to their patron god, Helios. With its pointy crown, the statue bears a striking resemblance to another famous statue situated near an island city: the Statue of Liberty, which was actually modeled on the Colossus.
