Random Tidbits
During the court-martial
that followed the capture of USS Chesapeake by HMS Shannon, Midshipman William
Sitgreaves Cox, the junior-most officer on the Chesapeake, was charged with
cowardice, disobedience of orders, desertion from quarters, neglect of duty,
and unofficerlike conduct. He had taken the injured captain below-deck during
the battle and could not regain the deck when the British boarded the
Chesapeake.
In the end, Mr. Cox was
only convicted of unofficerlike conduct, and neglect of duty for leaving the
deck when he knew, or should have known, that a boarding action was imminent,
since every other officer above him was either injured or out-of-action and Cox
was technically in command of Chesapeake.
Cox's family tried for
nearly 140 years to exonerate his name. Finally, in 1952, Cox's great grandson,
succeeded in bringing the matter to the attention of the House Armed Services
Committee which reviewed the historical facts of the case and recommended his
reinstatement.

Since the coronavirus outbreak, my 47-year-old son has been washing
his hands religiously. In fact, he said, “I’ve been washing my hands so much, I
found the answers to an old eighth-grade math quiz.”

Busch
looking for canine 'chief tasting officer'
The
makers of Busch beer announced they are seeking a very good boy or girl to make
$20,000 by serving as "chief tasting officer" for Dog Brew, a
"beer" made for dogs. Anheuser-Busch said its inaugural batch of Dog
Brew, an alcohol-free "beer" actually made from bone broth, sold out
within 24 hours last year, and it is now looking for a canine "chief
tasting officer" to help expand the line of offerings. The dog will be paid
$20,000 for the role and will be responsible for "taste-testing, quality
control, and fulfilling duties as an ambassador for the product." The dog
will also become a "featured creator" for Busch's social media
channels. Perks of the position include pet insurance and a free supply of Dog
Brew.

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts
Weatherman says these clouds may bring some showers. Then he says
precipitation forecast is less than 5%. It’s still a warm day. From Facebook: We
take care of Mother Earth, she will take care of us.
When I had our outdoor lunch that lasted about 2-1/2 hour, I got a
slight sunburn. When I headed to the barber this morning, I discovered that the
top of my head had gotten a little burned. I hadn’t had a haircut for 2 months,
so I had quite a bit chopped off. While my hair is getting thin on top, the
sides are still very thick. Feels good to be cleaned up.
It is good news that during Biden’s Climate Summit the President of
China was in attendance. China is far from being a friend right now, but good
that he participated in the Summit. Baby steps.
The Chinese Uyghurs are the Muslim minority living in NW China. They
are closer ethnically to Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan than they are to China. The
Chinese government has had ‘re-education camps’ for several years. NPR did a piece
on them a few days ago. I was stunned as I listened. Describing the treatment
of this minority is almost parallel to what the US did to the Native Americans…taken
from their family, forced to go to government schools, forbidden and punished
for speaking their language or practicing their ways, forced to learn history
from the oppressor’s point of view. It is so difficult to see history repeating
itself once again against a minority.
The US is number 1 with 38,658; Canada is number 2 with 611; Israel is
number 3 with 105; then Great Britain with 50; Switzerland with 47; Sweden with
41; Japan with 10…Handgun deaths.
