Rambling Thoughts
Overall it was a good Labor Day weekend. Rain dampened some plans
but not all.
While shopping, after getting a haircut, I ran into a Tuba friend.
We had lunch and caught up…nice!
Still just SMH as I listen to the KY story about gay marriage
licenses. Today, two GOP candidates showed up at the jail and spewed their own
beliefs in support of a woman who is breaking the law. I really don’t care who believes in or doesn’t
believe in same sex marriage. I do not appreciate elected officials who believe
their religious beliefs include forcing others to live by those same beliefs.
Freedom of Religion is exactly that and not Freedom for all to be forced to
live by my religion.
Strange visitor last night. This young kid shows up at the door
with a laminated sheet of paper and an ice chest. He reads his speech and wants
my help by buying his goods. He says he is from Scotsdale and is in a group
that is teaching him business skills and keeping him out of trouble. He is
raising money to go to Oak Creek and swim and play, since there are no lakes or
ponds in Scottsdale. Huh? I tried not to laugh out loud. His group drove right
by Oak Creek to get to my place. It is something like $5 parking for any sized
vehicle. The Creek is free. And there are lakes and ponds within 5 miles of
central Scottsdale for everyone. He had the necessary permit to be selling in
our town, so I bought some of his cookies. Strange way to teach business practices
by having high school kids make up sad stories to sell stuff.

The Arizona State Highway Department is seeking to improve the
north/southbound traffic flow, contending that the 12,000 vehicles per day
traffic flow requires 2 full lanes in both directions. This may well require a
complete relocation of the highway.
The old building at the southwest corner of Birch and San
Francisco has been spray cleaned with a toxic chemical spray to make it ready
for new paint. Given the passersby complaints, the Coconino County Board of
Health has issued a cease and desist order.

Germany – a court ordered a dentist (identified only as “K”) to pay the
equivalent of about $21,000 to patient “Alex S” for pulling all of his teeth
(19) over four weeks of treatments—as the remedy for his schizophrenia and
erectile dysfunction. The dentists had testified that Alex had too much bone inflammation
for ordinary fillings. K made his own claim for the equivalent of about $54,000
for the damage to his professional reputation that the trial had caused, but
the court rejected it.

McGuire is considered the Father of the Labor Day holiday. An Irish-American
cabinet maker and pioneer unionist, McGuire proposed a day dedicated to all who
labor at a meeting of the Central Labor Union on May 18,1882 where he stated,
"Let us have, a festive day during which a parade through the streets of
the city would permit public tribute to American Industry." He is
described as a red-headed, fiery, eloquent leader of the Brotherhood of
Carpenters and Joiners.

of wage and salary workers belong to unions, with New York having among the
highest rates of any state--25 percent. North Carolina has one of the lowest
