My Rambling Thoughts
I remembered last night that I needed to do a fasting blood test…never
my favorite. I didn’t eat or drink anything after 9pm, got up at my usual 6:30a
and waited until 9a to go for the damn blood test. Finished that about 9:45 and
headed out to breakfast, as I was starving.
Got home and did the laundry. Boring. All is now folded or hung and/or
put away.
Mary and I are doing lunch tomorrow and when we set it up she was
busy gathering tax records as her home state of Oregon sent her a delinquent tax
notice with penalties growing every day. She paid the estimated tax in January,
filed in April and expected a refund check as she knew she paid too much. Now
they not only want all she paid, but they want more and are charging her a
penalty every day until she pays. I went through that with CO a few years ago
and it is no fun. I’ll learn more tomorrow at lunch.
About taxes, I fully understand that my investments make for a
complicated tax return. I also am a middle class senior citizen. I do not think
that I should have to pay over $1000 a year to have my taxes done. The tax code
is so complicated and Congress makes it more complicated every year…something
like 3000 new pages of rules this year alone. I am rapidly becoming a flat tax
person, No deductions, no IRS, no tax preparers. The IRS already knows how much
money you received. Let them send me a bill each year for X% of that income. If
I had more withheld than I owe, then let me sign the bill and get a check. If I
owe them money, let me send a check along with the bill. I know that many
people enjoy the tax code and find it a game to find all the possible deductions
etc. It is not for me. I want everyone to pay their fair share and a flat tax
seems to be the only way.

shopping center. Her arms were laden with a mop and broom and other cleaning
supplies. By her hard glances and deep sighs, it was obvious she was in hurry
and not a happy camper about the slowness of the line.
When the cashier called for a price check on a box of soap, the woman remarked
indignantly, "Well, I'll be lucky to get out of here and home before
Christmas!"

BERGEN,
Norway (UPI) - Cats and dogs have nothing on this one. Thousands of earthworms
rained down on parts of Norway, leaving scientist baffled by the appearance of
the slimy invertebrates on snow-covered grounds. Biology teacher Karstein
Erstad made the discovery as he was skiing in the mountains outside the coastal
city of Bergen. At first he thought they crawled atop the snow from the ground
beneath, but then realized the snow was too deep.
"When I found them on the snow they seemed to be dead, but
when I put them in my hand I found that they were alive," he said.
"In many places, the snow thickness was between half a meter and a meter
(1 1/2 feet to 3 feet) and I think they would have problems crawling through
the cold snow."
Erstad took a sample to Trond Haraldsen, an environmental expert
at the Bioforsk research institute in Norway. "This is a phenomenon we
know from the literature, but it is the first time in my time as a scientist
that I have got the message that it has happened on the snow, "Haralsen
told the Bergens Tidende. Since the incident, reports have come in from other
areas of the country as far away as the Swedish border. Experts suggest the
worms may have been lifted into the air by a weather system and blown miles
from their original location.

In
South Asian weddings, the bridesmaids steal the groom's shoes and hide them on
the day of the wedding, forcing him to be shoeless at the reception. The
younger crowd gathers to take part in a negotiation of how much money the
bridesmaids should get for the shoes.
In parts of Malaysia, newlywed couples aren't allowed to go to the washroom for
three days and nights after their wedding. It's believed that it will bring
back luck, such as divorce or infertility.
In Danish weddings, if the bride or groom leaves the other's side, the
remaining spouse gets swarmed with kisses from the wedding party until their
better half returns.
Weddings in Cuba can be difficult to afford. To have enough money for the
honeymoon, the guests at the wedding do a money dance. Every man who dances
with the bride pins money on your dress.
At Jewish weddings at which the parents' last child is married, a special dance
called the Mizinke is performed. The bride and groom give the parents crowns of
flowers to wear, and guests make a circle and dance around them, coming forward
to wish them 'mazel tov.'
In Yemen, the groom's father throws raisins on the ground for guests to pick
up. Raisins are meant to symbolize happiness for the happy couple.
