I had a
great lunch with our retirement group, along with Cheryl’s sister from Michigan.
I caught everyone up on Africa, Mary caught us all up on Oregon, and Cheryl on
her many family visits this summer. We are all having good summers and I think
we were all glad to be back in AZ. Visiting out of state or traveling for an
adventure certainly takes a toll on us…and it seems to mostly be a mental toll.
Mary had lots of pics of her grandkids.
I’m trying
very hard to get a handle on the Aurora tragedy. What a shock to wake up and
NPR talking about my home state. Aurora, like Columbine, is miles away from where
I grew up. All I know about Aurora is that the old Stapleton Airport was there and
their main drag was known for its speed traps. Of course that was decades ago. When
I found the shooter was attending the Aurora campus of my alma mater it shocked
me. Just like Columbine changed America’s
schools, and 9-11 changed America, this is going to change movie going and not
just for those all common midnight openings but all movie viewing. Thankfully,
many law enforcement and movie goers have said that this can’t change movie
going habits…but we all know it will. I have said many times that I leave a
restaurant when someone enters strapped with a weapon…even though AZ has an ‘open
carry’ law. I choose not to be in the same area as someone who carries. I’m
expecting to see changes in movie going, even here in little ol’ Flag. So many
questions and so few answers. It will take time to find out how he got the
guns, why is broke from reality, and why he has changed America. This is not
the time for an overreaction by the theaters, the movie goers, or Homeland
Security. I keep telling myself, this was at one theater out of thousands
across the country with this midnight opening…but then I remember it was one
guy with a shoe bomb that makes all travelers remove shoes to get through
security. We certainly live in very strange times.

The

news."
"Well,
alright, give me the bad news first," said the man.
"Well,"
said the doctor, "The bad news is that you only have 24 hours to
live."
"Holy
Cow! That is some bad news!" the man exclaimed. "What news could be
worse than that?" he asked.
"The
worse news is that I have been trying to reach you since yesterday."

- Guinness World Records said 1,001 people clung tight to mattresses in China
to set the world record for largest human mattress dominoes. Guinness
adjudicator Dong Cheng said the volunteers gathered in Shanghai to beat the
record of 850, which was set in February in New Orleans. Cheng said the human
mattress dominoes took 11 minutes and 11 seconds to fall. "For an event
like this involving 1,000 people, to succeed [the] first time is not just about
luck. All other conditions must be correct. First of all, all the participants
must fully understand the rules," Cheng said. "Second, the volunteers
were all very brave. No one dodged when the 2-meter-high [about 6 feet-high]
mattress fell onto them."

North Korean arms outnumber those in the South by
about two to one, including offensive weapons such as tanks, long-range
artillery, aircraft and armored personnel carriers. However, much of the Military
equipment in North Korea is obsolete.
The border between North and South Korea is one of
the most militarized areas in the world, according to the State Department,
with a combined total of almost two million military personnel under the
control of Pyongyang (1.2 million), Seoul (680,000) and foreign powers
including the United States (28,000).
