Rambling Thoughts
Cheryl and I had a good Chinese lunch today. Caught up on all the interesting politics of AZ and the Zimmerman trial, along with local stuff. Cheryl’s neighbor is back in the hospital and not doing well. The family is looking for a reasonable assisted living facility with little luck in the area. Most are too expensive. On the Zimmerman trial we decided that our careers of working with kids gave us a different perspective about kids than most of the general population. We both worked with kids every year about the same age, whereas parents and others only work with any age only once. This must be what gave us a different perspective on the death of a 17 year old. As educators we didn’t label a child for the way s/he dressed or looked. We both saw many kids who were ‘different’ but certainly not ‘frightening’. Through the years we saw many dress styles, hair styles, and attitude styles change. One lesson I learned was a year when a clique of ‘rowdy’ 8th grade girls stopped wearing jeans and shirts to class and started coming to class in dresses. While many on the staff were happy to see this change, they were still simply rebels who wanted to be different…and still just as rowdy. I also remember a student at a school who transferred in after his mother farmed him out to her sister. He had a haircut that let his hair cover most of his face. His aunt said when he came to school the next day his hair would be much shorter. I asked the boy if that is what he wanted. He said no. I told the aunt we would take him with the long hair as long as he did his work and didn’t disrupt the class. We all agreed. I talked to the teachers he would have about his rather difficult life prior to arriving at our school. The teachers embraced his difference and he was one of the top students in his class. When graduation day arrived, he showed up with his hair all slicked back and a big smile. None of the teachers even recognized him. As I was handing him the diploma I asked if the new look was his idea. His answer was ‘yes, sir…thank you.’ It seems the jurors agreed with Zimmerman that a black kid in a hoodie scared them. Sad commentary.

LAKE WORTH, Fla. - Authorities in Florida said two men allegedly stole hygiene products from a Family Dollar store by stuffing the goods into their underpants. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said Nicolas Williams, 24, and Vincent Wilder, 34, were arrested after employees at the Lake Worth store saw them allegedly stuff personal hygiene products into their underpants and attempt to leave the shop without paying, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported Tuesday. Deputies said Williams had used electrical tape to fasten his underpants to his legs and keep the stolen products from falling down the legs of his pants. Wilder did not use tape on his legs. Williams and Wilder allegedly told police they planned to sell the $339.42 worth of hygiene products they took from the store.
Somewhat Useless Information
- Between 10-12 percent of the people on earth are left-handed, and yet tests conducted by St. Lawrence University in New York found that there were more left-handed people with IQs over 140 than right-handed people.
- The word left in English comes from the Anglo-Saxon word lyft, which means weak or broken. The Oxford English Dictionary defines left-handed as meaning crippled, defective, awkward, clumsy, inapt, characterized by underhanded dealings, ambiguous, doubtful, questionable, ill-omened, inauspicious, and illegitimate.
- Research indicates that left-handers are more likely to become alcoholics, schizophrenic, delinquent, and dyslexic. They are also more likely to have Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, or mental disabilities. Scholars note that despite these maladies, left-handers have survived because they are traditionally successful in combat.
