Random Tidbits
The
original jack-o'-lanterns were made with turnips and potatoes by the Irish. In
England, they used large beets and lit them with embers to ward off evil
spirits. Irish immigrants brought their customs to America, but found that
pumpkins were much easier to carve.
Each
pumpkin has about 500 seeds. And they take between 90 and 120 days to grow.
High in iron, they can be roasted to eat. The flowers that grow on pumpkin
vines are also edible.

My Rambling Thoughts
The wind is making it a chilly day as the pine needles pile up on the roof,
sidewalk, street, and gutter. The wind
is not helping our drought condition at all. In August, none of Northern AZ was
in severe drought, now at the end of October over 40% of Northern AZ is in
severe drought.
I was saddened to hear of the passing of Eileen Griffith, a Focus traveler.
She was a great traveler and lived her 99 year life to the fullest. She was
still doing Interior Design well into her mid-90’s. Her son was my classmate in
high school. She was an elegant lady who lived her life to the fullest.
Unless you have lived in a very rural area, you have a hard time
understanding the need for addresses. On the Rez there is no home delivery of
US mail…everyone has a PO Box. Most businesses will not deliver without a
physical address. For decades an address would be ‘1/4 N of NN Road 61, 2 miles
S of Trading Post’. Now that is being updated with many on various
reservations, including the Navajo, are getting ‘real’ street addresses that
will be available on GPS for deliveries. Nice!
Most of us have at least one email address. Before social media, it was a
great way to stay in contact with friends, and associates, without having to
wait for snail mail. The first email was sent 50 years ago between 2 University
computers in California. The computers were on two different campuses. The original
email was supposed to read ‘LogIn’. All that was sent was ‘LO’ before the ‘internet
connection’ crashed. The receiver thought
the message was supposed to be ‘hello’. This also became the beginning of
internet language that shortened words so messages would take less typing
skill.
