TODAY’s “Geez”: 1937 - Memorial Day Massacre - Chicago police shoot on union marchers, 10 die
Free Rambling Thoughts…
Flag has had 60mph wind gusts since early afternoon. Glad I didn’t have to be out in it. I even had to close all the windows, not because of the wind, but because of the noise. I did take a walk this morning before the wind started. Then stayed inside and did laundry this afternoon. We have a lot of elementary aged kids at the complex, and none of them were outside this afternoon. I’m sure some are off with family for the long weekend, but quite a few were out this morning, and then disappeared.
My parents called today ‘Decoration Day’. It was officially known as ‘Memorial Day’, but for them it was always the older name. The tradition of placing flowers and/or flags on graves of soldiers dates back to the end of the Civil War. Ladies placed flowers on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers. Many Southern states still celebrate a separate holiday to honor the Confederate soldiers. It is time that our nation recognizes that the wounds of war, any war, are deep and don’t heal with time. So today, I will stop and remember the soldiers who have given everything to make our country what it is today. I will also hope that sometime in my lifetime, it won’t be necessary to fight a war for any reason. A time it won’t be necessary for any young person in any country to die fighting for their homeland.
Tonight is the PBS Memorial Day Concert. Can’t miss that. It is always good patriotic music and nice to recognize our fallen soldiers.

GRAYSLAKE, Ill. - Police in a Chicago suburb said they arrested a woman accused of biting several packages of beef jerky and returning them to a store shelf. Grayslake police said Wendy Staples, 50, refused to pay for the jerky after a Dollar General store manager observed her biting through the plastic of the packages and putting them back on the shelf, the Chicago Tribune reported Thursday. Sgt. Scott Heimos said Staples allegedly pushed the manager in the chest when she was asked to leave. He said Staples claimed to be a law enforcement officer during her arrest. "We know she's not, because we've dealt with her before," Heimos said. Staples was charged with criminal damage to property, battery and criminal trespass. She was released on $1,500 bond. Heimos said investigators do not know the motive behind the jerky-biting.

One day the first grade teacher was reading the story of Chicken Little to her class. She came to the part of the story where Chicken Little tried to warn the farmer. She read, ".... and so Chicken Little went up to the farmer and said, "The sky is falling, the sky is falling!"
The teacher paused then asked the class, "And what do you think that farmer said?"
One little girl raised her hand and said, "I think he said: 'Holy Mackerel! A talking chicken!'"
The teacher was unable to teach for the next 10 minutes.
