Finally, the
internet is working. It is hard to
believe, but the Afghan war cost an average of $300million a DAY for 2
decades. What do we have to show for it…Not enough. There were 2,401 United
States military deaths in the War in Afghanistan. 1,921 of these deaths were
the result of hostile action. 20,752 American servicemembers were also
wounded in action during the war. In addition, 18 Central Intelligence Agency
(CIA) operatives also died in Afghanistan. Further, there were 1,822 civilian
contractor fatalities. On February 19, 2010, American fatalities had reached
1,000, when U.S. Marine Reconnaissance Cpl. Gregory Stultz of Brazil,
Indiana, was killed by small arms' fire in battle with Taliban fighters
during the invasion of Marjah, Operation Moshtarak, and by April 11, 2011,
the number was 1,515. By September 2012, the total number surpassed 2,000. The ‘big rally’
didn’t come off in DC. As it became clear that few were going to show up, the
Trump people warned, among others, that the rally was a trap to arrest more
patriots. Anything for attention. Today, in 1971,
I started my job at Shonto, AZ as a 3rd grade teacher. I remember
standing in front of the school calling home collect to let my parents know
that I had arrived, moved into my apartment, and would have a phone in about
a month. Until then, I would call when I could. I know they were wondering
what I had gotten into. My grandfather, brother, and parents drove down at
Thanksgiving to check on me. I told them to call from the hotel at Kayenta to
let me know, so I could meet them at the highway. They got to the hotel about
11:30 and it was closed, so they came on their own. My mother had sent me
drapes, so they had an idea from pictures where I lived. They arrived at my
apartment about midnight. All was well, and we cooked a turkey the next day.
Great visit. They stopped at the turnoff to the dirt road, got out of the car
to stretch. They stayed there about 15 minutes staring at the sky and noting
there were so many stars. |
