Thoughts for the day
A chilly day and the winds have subsided.
The latest figures on the California
fires: currently 98 wildfires; 190,000 evacuations; covers 30,000+ acres; over
$50billion in damage; 10 lost lives. Today a drone hit a plane wing delivering
water to the fire. That grounded all planes for a few hours. Reminder: drones
in a fire event is a federal crime; there is a $75,000 fine and up to one year
in prison.
I saw my kidney doctor this morning. I
got a good report and will see her every 6 month. Nice. She is a great doctor
and is from Beijing. We spent a little time reviewing the beauty on my travels
and on her recent trip to her hometown. She reminded me it was very different
that before COVID. Good report and she apologized for the scan that was
cancelled. She also expressed how many not-so-good things have happened in
China. She said there were police and video cameras everywhere and that now
locals are very cautious around tourists for fear of being seen talking to
visitors. That can lead to a visit by the police to find out what they were talking
about.
Mayan Culture of Mexico and beyond…NEW
There are still Mayan
cities and sites being discovered.
The Classic Maya
civilization grew to about 40 cities at its peak. Today, for as much as the
Mayan world has been discovered, there is still so much more that lies shrouded
deep within jungles or buried beneath the Earth.
In fact, it was only a
few years ago that a pyramid dating more than 1,000 years was discovered at
Tonina in Chiapas, Mexico. The majority of the site of Calakmul in Campeche,
Mexico, is less than 50 percent uncovered as well.

Buy artwork from
students at colleges near you. You can get great
stuff for cheap from new artists that are ecstatic to be acknowledged and make
even a little money. Win-win!
We are all just one hit
away from being one hit wonders.
When the “a” in “a part” is a part of the word “apart” it means the opposite of “a part.”

Origin of city nicknames…
Detroit, Michigan: ‘Motor City’
This one is pretty
self-explanatory. In the early 20th century, no other city was more associated
with the growing automobile industry than Detroit. The so-called 'Big
Three' of Ford, General Motors and Chrysler all had headquarters in
the city, and by the 1940s they controlled 90% of the American market share,
making Detroit a boomtown. Times change, however, and by the 1960s ‘Motor City’
was in serious economic decline. But its legend lived on in other ways, with
Berry Gordy’s aptly named Motown label reminding people of the city’s glory
days.
