Thoughts for the day

It is a cold and windy day. It is overcast but no moisture in the forecast. I had a nice lunch with Faith and Andy. Good conversation and great soup!

President Carter’s funeral was very nice. Long, but nice.

Inventions…

Joseph Friedman - Bendy Straw

Joseph Friedman invented the bendy straw in 1937 after watching his young daughter struggle with a straight straw. He inserted a screw into a straight straw, wrapped dental floss around the grooves, and created the accordion-like bend. The flexible straw design made drinking easier for hospital patients and young children. His invention later became standard in hospitals and homes worldwide.

Random Thoughts…

I want hang a map of the world in my house. Then I’m gonna put pins into all the locations that I’ve traveled to. But first, I’m gonna have to travel to the top two corners of the map so it won’t fall down.

A group of Hyenas is called a Cackle or Clan.

Sushi was originally a preservation method for the fish. Only later did people begin to eat the rice.

Domestic cats kill between 1.4 and 3.7 billion birds and between 6.9 and 20.7 billion mammals each year in the United States

Until 1954, STOP signs featured black writing on a yellow background, but the invention of a red finish that resisted fading allowed for the standardization of the idea that “red means stop” across both traffic lights and signs.

Arachibutyrophobia is the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth.

Origin of city nicknames…

Cleveland, Ohio: ‘The Mistake on the Lake’

Hardly the most affectionate of nicknames, ‘The Mistake on the Lake,’ was originally used by locals as a dismissive term for the unloved Cleveland Municipal Stadium. However, it came to be applied to the whole city in the 1960s. Like many urban centers at the time, Cleveland was going through hard times, with failing industry, a declining population and increasing racial tensions. Use of the disparaging moniker was a deliberate attempt to draw attention to its failings, countering an earlier, somewhat optimistic, campaign to promote the city as the ‘Best Location in the Nation.’
