Thoughts for the day

I read my articles and was putting finishing touches on my presentation today when I got a call that the host and his wife both tested positive for Covid. They had just returned from a Road Scholar trip. He had sent out an email and was not following up with a phone call. It’s OK, I’ll do it at our next meeting.

I grew up with the Rocky Mountain News and the Denver Post being delivered every day. My dad even trained our dogs to bring the paper in when it came. During the last days before an election, both parents (1 a Dem, 1 a Rep) would review who both papers endorsement and then make up their own minds.  I know it was only for perspective.

I was surprised when major newspapers announced they were not endorsing a candidate for president in this election. At least one of these papers leans left. I’m not sure if it just billionaires sticking together, or a fear that if they don’t endorse Trump, and Trump wins, they will pay a huge price. I don’t recognize this kind of journalism and to be honest, I fear for the free press…and maybe the Constitution if Trump is elected.

Random Thoughts…

Perrier water is naturally carbonated, but CO2 is taken out during purification, and then added back in artificially for bottling.

England, Wales, and Scotland are part of Great Britain; Great Britain and Northern Ireland make up the United Kingdom; the United Kingdom, Isle of Man, and the eight Channel Islands make up the British Islands; and the British Islands plus the Republic of Ireland make up the British Isles.

Benjamin Franklin, Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, Henry Ford and Bill Gates had all, at least once during their lives, been the richest man in the world. They shared one thing in common – a father named William.

Native American Facts…

Native American Tribes Are Revitalizing Their Languages & Cultures

Despite centuries of cultural suppression and forced assimilation, Native American tribes are actively working to revitalize their languages and traditions. Many tribes have established language immersion schools, cultural centers, and youth programs to ensure their heritage is passed on to future generations.

The Hawai’ian language, for example, was once on the brink of extinction, but thanks to the efforts of Native Hawai’ian educators and activists, it is now taught in schools and universities across the islands.

Similarly, the Navajo Nation has implemented a comprehensive language revitalization program to ensure that the Navajo language remains a living, vibrant part of the community. These efforts demonstrate the resilience and determination of Native American peoples to maintain their cultural identities in the face of ongoing challenges.

As we celebrate the rich history and diverse cultures of Native American tribes, it is important to recognize the struggles they have faced and continue to face. By learning about these 20 surprising facts, we can gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for indigenous peoples’ contributions, resilience, and vitality.

Let us honor their legacy by supporting their ongoing fights for self-determination, cultural preservation, and social justice.

2004 - The Boston Red Sox ended the “Curse of the Bambino”—an alleged hex that began in 1920 when the team's owner sent Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees in exchange for $125,000 and a personal loan—by defeating the St. Louis Cardinals to win the World Series title. It was the Red Sox's first MLB championship in 86 years.
