Thoughts for the day
A nice weather day as I am awaiting
the snow the weatherman predicted.
Flagstaff officials continue to issue
a statement that to their knowledge there are no ICE agents doing roundups
here. Many residents are nervous.
Trump cancelled all refugee flights to
the US. That includes about 10,000 Afghans who have been vetted, helped the US
during the war, and had tickets for a plane ride here.
In my many overseas travels to 3rd
world countries, I just assumed that the airline would have permission to land
in the country. Seems the US military made the same assumption, without
checking. Now they must bring the deportees back to the US after being denied permission
to land. Not a good look for Trump.
I learned a new word: Cockwomble
(noun) A person, usually
male, prone to making outrageously stupid statements and/or
inappropriate behavior while generally having a very high opinion of their own
wisdom and importance.
Mayan Culture of Mexico and beyond…
Caves were considered
entrances to the underworld.
For the Maya, Earth
existed between Heaven and Hell. The underworld was known as Xibalba, and it
was believed that the way to access the underworld was through caves. It was
within the caves that the Maya performed their rituals and sacrifices.
Today, it's possible to
visit these caves when you explore the jungles of Quintana Roo and Yucatan near
Cancun. When tourists go snorkeling in cenotes (underground rivers), guides
will often point out locations where Mayan artifacts have been found.

Origin of city nicknames…
Los Angeles, California: ‘City of
Angels’
This one may seem
self-explanatory, as Los Angeles is Spanish for 'the angels', but the history
of the nickname is more complex. The city was originally called 'El Pueblo de
Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles del Rio de Porciuncula', meaning
'The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels of the Porciuncula
River' – a name reflecting the influence of Catholic missionaries in
the 18th century. Over time, the name was inevitably
shortened: first to 'El Pueblo de Los Angeles' and eventually
just 'Los Angeles'. The historic district known as El Pueblo de Los
Angeles is often referred to as 'the birthplace of Los Angeles', marking
the location of the original Spanish settlement, which was a multi-ethnic
community from its inception.
