Labor Day

Labor Day should be a holiday for all workers. Well, in today’s world, it seems that many many workers had to work today. Such a shame. Many were working to try and stay ahead of the game. Before I retired, I did usually put a couple of hours in at work on many holidays, for that exact reason. No interruptions, no crisis to deal with, just a time to catch up. My brother and his wife took off from the city on Friday and came back yesterday. Today they were both in the office, trying to get ready for tomorrow. It’s pretty amazing that we Americans take some of the shortest vacation time of any Western country. In these financial unsettled times, this is happening even more. The fear that someone else will be one step ahead. The fear that someone else is out to get our job or our money. This is much easier to see after retiring—on the outside looking in. Today was a day to honor our Labor Force. If they want to spend it working, it’s fine with me.

So I just enjoyed the day. Nowhere to rush to, nothing that had to be done. I had a nice talk with my brother, two different friends stopped by on the way back to the Rez after a weekend in Phoenix. It’s still over 100° down there, and I just don’t get the draw. Some from the Rez just seem to be drawn to the bright lights and the traffic.

I’ve been talking about how broke the state of AZ is. Today it was revealed that many charter schools have been getting tax free donations. These donations were set up for Private schools that get no state funding. The Charter Schools are fully funded by the state. Hmmm. The investigation shows about $600,000 of tax free donations may have been used. Sure sounds like a bunch of people dropped the ball.

Crazy Stuff in the News…

WICHITA, Kan. – Police in Kansas said two men attempting to steal landscaping rocks were foiled when the load shifted and their truck sank into the Arkansas River. Lt. Guy Schroeder said the brown Ford Explorer was backed up to the river next to the Keeper of the Plains sculpture in Wichita just before 1:20 a.m. Thursday while the men loaded limestone landscaping rocks into the truck, The Wichita Eagle reported. Schroeder said the load shifted once the men had 12 rocks inside, causing the truck to roll backward into the river. Investigators said an address linked to the truck is apparently in the process of front yard landscaping. Police said no arrests had been made, but they have identified a 45-year-old suspect.
