The Southwest Skye Pipe and Drums were a big success at the fair. The audience had a great time. The band seemed to have a better time. As the hour of entertainment continued, the crowd just grew larger and larger. It rained before and after the performance but thankfully not during the performance. They even had a bagpiper playing a Spanish bagpipe. Very cool. Even better, the lady who schedules all this stuff asked if they could do two performances next year. This is great for such a young band of young and older pipers.

Due to the very cool weather and the impending showers, I skipped most of the fair. Probably a good thing. Maybe tomorrow I will hit the booths—if the sky is clear. Today was the first day in a long time I had to wear jeans, a long sleeve shirt and shoes and socks. Fall is in the air and I guess my Teva’s will have to be set aside for awhile. We only got to 63° today and the humidity and rain made it feel a lot cooler.

Crazy Stuff in the News…

You would expect this one to come out of the United States, but this story is actually from the Netherlands, home of Amsterdam and botanical tolerance…among other things.
Dutch police swooped down on what they thought was an illegal cannabis farm. Police announced they had discovered about 47,000 cannabis plants with an estimated street value of 4.4 million euros (about 6.3 million dollars).
Unfortunately, what they found was a scientific experiment being run by the University of Wageningen.
The plants were part of a legal experiment on the suitability of cannabis fibers for the production of textiles, paper and synthetic materials.
“The project had been underway for years and was in its final phase, which would have allowed us to introduced these new fibers to the market,” said Simon Vink, spokesman for the university. “More than half the plants were destroyed.”
But, said Vink, the plants were unfit for cannabis production due to an extremely low content of THC, the psycho-active ingredient for soft drug use.
The Netherlands decriminalized the consumption and possession of under five grams of cannabis in 1976, though cultivation remains illegal.
