Random Tidbits

At various times in history, left-handedness has been seen as many things: a nasty habit, a mark of the devil, a sign of neurosis, rebellion, criminality, and homosexuality. It has also been seen as a trait indicating creativity and musical abilities.

Between 10-12 percent of people on earth are "lefties." Women are more likely to be right-handed than men by about 4 percentage points.

State Name Origins

There are several Native American name possibilities for Ohio. One suggests that the name "Ohio" originates from the Iroquois word for "good river." Other origins claim "Ohio" might have come from the Wyandot people's word meaning "large/great" or "the great one" or it was derived from the Seneca word "ohi-yo'" meaning "large creek".

The Sooner State's name comes from the Choctaw people's words "okla humma," which roughly means "red people" or "red persons."

True Things

A California man attempting to defend his home from a wildfire said he turned to an unusual source of help when his water was shut off: several cases of Bud Lite beer.

Chad Little said he decided to stay behind when his family evacuated their Vacaville home last week as the LNU Lightning Complex Fires approached their neighborhood.

Little said he had hoses set up around the house to provide a consistent source of water to keep the flames away from the house, but he started worrying when the water to the area was shut off.

The homeowner, whose house previously burned down five years ago in a fire sparked by an attic fan, said he grabbed one of his 30-packs of Bud Lite cans.

"That was the only thing I had that I had a lot of, and it was wet," he told The Vacaville Reporter. "Luckily, I had a bunch of cases of Bud Light and I was able to get it out."

Little pulled away some sheet metal from the wall of his workshop and used an exposed nail to pop holes in the cans.

"When I ripped up the sheet metal, it had a nail, so I was just shaking it up, popping it just and spraying them, popping it out and grabbing another one," Little told local news. "My buddies all tease me about drinking water beer, and I say, 'Hey, saved my shop.'"

He said firefighters eventually arrived in the neighborhood and helped keep the flames away from his home.

Little said his carport burned to the ground, but his home was untouched by the flames.

My Rambling Thoughts

A nice Monday with hopes of monsoon this afternoon. Weather guy says ‘scattered’ showers. Sure hope I am in the scattered part.

Since my office TV’s cable box isn’t working, I’m going old school and listening to NPR. Guess I will survive and become more educated at the same time.

The sale of the TicTok app just got more interesting. China has changed the law so that any sale of Tech knowledge or apps must be approved by the central government. There sure is a lot of hoopla over an app used mostly by pre-teens to early 20-year olds.

Trump has added a new member to the Covid Task Force. It is Dr. Scot Atlas, a well-known neuroradiologist and not an expert in public health or infectious diseases. Oh, and he has said disparaging things about Fauci and Brix. Great!

NAU in-person start today. They have 7000 students in the dorms. The 7 students who tested positive have been isolated in a dorm. They will not release numbers of employees testing positive, due to laws regarding patient confidentiality. Seriously, that is their line.

State Name Origins

No mystery as to how the Tar Heel State got its name. Carolina, derived from the Latin word for Charles (Carolus), was named by King Charles II of England to honor his father, King Charles I in the 17th century. Carolina would eventually be divided into two colonies, North and South Carolina, in 1712.

Both North and South Dakota get their name from the Sioux word for "friend" or "ally," though there is no definitive detail for this origin.

My Rambling Thoughts

Nice day with sunny sky. Hoping clouds will come in for more monsoon. It rained a bit yesterday.

The past few days with technology have driven me crazy. First, my On Demand on my cable box said to call for help. I did, but the automated menu was a bust. Today I called and did the automated thing again, then finally got an option for a human. She sent a signal to one of my cable boxes to fix the issue. It didn’t, but it also messed up the cable box so I can’t watch TV in my office. After her screw up, I asked for a supervisor. After 10 minutes of waiting, she said she wasn’t sure if the supervisor was taking other calls or if no one was in the office. She said they would call me back. She didn’t know when. Also, a technician will come outbetween 8am & noon on the 1st. Second, my internet connection through Century Link has been slow. Now it is just sporadic. After about 30 minutes of messing with it, the technician set up an appointment for the Sep. 2 ‘around 9am’. Something about there is too much static on the internet line and it needs to be cleaned up. It will probably be a vacuum cleaner they bought from China on the internet.

National Intelligence had a vision this weekend and officially announced they will no longer do in-person hearings with the Congress. The way they will communicate is through writing since there are too many leaks. Somehow their vision told them that providing with hearings with something in writing on a piece of paper can’t leak as easily as an in-person communication with nothing in writing. Somehow a piece of paper is harder to leak. Their vision included a tad too much of Mission Impossible, where the document disintegrates a few seconds after being read.

Now Wal-Mart has joined in bidding for TikTok along with Microsoft. If they get the company, I predict lots more ads and many fewer followers.

Karma can be difficult. A century ago, California outlawed any control burns used by many Native tribes for centuries. Now in 2020, California has decided that control burns might help in relieving the state from its horrendous fires. Hmmm.
