My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

Nights are getting pretty chilly.

Our mountain town parking restrictions begin today. There is no overnight street parking (midnight to 7am) and sidewalks must be clear within 24 hours of the last snowfall accumulation. This is not a problem for me as I am never ‘parking’ on public streets during those hours…in my younger days, it was a problem. Haha.

I was expecting my insurance bill to go up after my new vehicle replaced one that was 16 years old. I didn’t quite expect it to be close to $500 for six months. Not much I can do but just pay it. I’ve been with State Farm since I turned 16. I have had no claims in more than a decade. My last claim was for a windshield that was destroyed by a rock on the highway.

Back in 2013 I traveled with Focus Travel Club to Uganda to see the Mountain Gorillas. Last night 60 Minutes had a segment on the study of Pathogen X in Uganda.  Pathogen X is any pathogen, including Ebola and Covid. The scientists are searching for any pathogen that may move from other animals to humans. Part of the study is with the Mountain Gorilla. It sure was nice to see the impenetrable forest and a family of mountain gorillas again. Great memories for sure.

"Wipe Out" by The Surfaris (1963)

If "Misirlou" influenced generations of people to pick up a guitar, then "Wipe Out" did the same for drummers. Along the same surf theme as Dale's classic, The Surfaris enjoyed massive success with a song that has stood the test of time. Like "Miserlou," this piece is one of the most recognizable instrumentals and has been used in countless movies and television commercials.

Meaning/history of a phrase

Meet a deadline

A deadline was an actual line drawn on Civil War prisons. If a prisoner escaped and crossed that line, he would be killed. Not quite the same consequence as not responding to an email, right?

Historical Events

1611 – Shakespeare’s romantic comedy The Tempest was first presented

1967 – Cool Hand Luke starring Paul Newman, George Kennedy, and Strother Martin, was released. “What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate.”
1979 – Federal (US) government made a $1.5 billion loan guarantee for Chrysler. The government basically ‘cosigned’ a loan to keep the company in business.

Was a singular knife.

“Doubtless there are other roads.”– Stephen Crane

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

October is ending with a nice day.

Our discussion group went well. This is the last meeting of the year. We are all looking forward to January to start up again. Myanmar is having horrific problems. Our group believed that Myanmar sanctions were not working and that best way to help them was to let them sort it out. They are in desperate need of a leader from within the country that will lead them into living in peace without having to kill the opposition along the way. A Nelson Mandela type leader is needed. We all recognize this will not be easy, but colonization and invasions have not worked. Their own military has only made things worse. It must come from within.

South Korea lost 159 lives and has 133 injured at a Halloween celebration.  Everyone is awaiting more detail on this horrific story.

On the home front, Musk has fired most of his executive team. It is reported he fired them in hopes of not having to pay out $125+ in severance pay. Many are saying this will not hold up in court and that they will get their severance…someday. What a cheap bastard.

The Broncos beat the Jaguars in an early morning game in the UK. Hey, a win is a win…even if far away. The Cards lost another one...this time to the Vikings.

Best Instrumentals

“Frankenstein" by The Edgar Winter Group (1973)

This has to be up there with the great rock instrumentals of all time. A radio hit that went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 has long been a classic rock staple. While Winter's work on the ARP 2600 synthesizer and saxophone has become legendary, Ronnie Montrose's guitar and the bass effort from Dan Hartman add to the excellence of this superb cut.

Humor…

“It’s not that I’m afraid to die, I just don’t want to be there when it happens.” Woody Allen
