Thoughts for the day

Another chilly fall morning.

I had lunch with our retirement group today. Good food, great conversation. Everybody is doing well. Mary is having lots of medical tests, Faith’s sister is flying in to visit for a week. The waitress couldn’t get the machine to split the check correctly. Andy paid the machine, I paid the machine, and Mike paid the machine. Turns out I still owe Mike $7 after we got a print out of the bill. All good.

Myths

Myth #5: Pulling a Grenade With Your Teeth

You’ve probably witnessed the heart-pounding scenes in action-packed movies like Rambo, where the hero casually yanks a grenade pin with their teeth, instantly becoming the day’s savior. But before you entertain the thought of auditioning for your own action-hero role, let’s clear the air: your teeth aren’t cut out for this high-stakes job.

Grenade pins are engineered to withstand a level of force far beyond the capacity of your jaw. Trying to replicate this cinematic feat might lead to an unexpected visit to the dentist—or worse, an emergency room stay. The laws of physics simply don’t align with the theatrical flair.

Random Thoughts…

Mexico celebrates the Day of the Dead with passion as a day of mourning, remembrance, and commemoration of deceased family members and friends, as well as the death of a loved one. Far from being a morbid event, the Day of the Dead emphasizes the memory of past lives. The Mexican holiday is a time of celebration of death among relatives and a day of mourning for the dead.

According to tradition, the gates of heaven open at midnight on October 31 and the spirits of the children can return to their families for 24 hours. The holiday is celebrated in Mexico City between October 31 and November 2. While October 31 is Halloween, November First is the day of mourning for the dead, or Dia de Los Dia Muerte, in the Aztec tradition.

It is unofficial, but a widely observed holiday. It is a holiday focused on remembering deceased family members and friends, but something unique takes place during the Day of the Dead celebrations. The Dia, sometimes called Dia de Los Fieles or Difuntos, is celebrated on the first Sunday in November.

Ancient Roman Life

Chariot racing was quickly Rome’s most popular sport

Julius Caesar was not the only one to love chariot racing. He was responsible for expanding Circus Maximus, Rome’s chariot racing ring, to accommodate 150,000 to 200,000. Chariot racing was the most popular sport in Rome. Each race consisted of four teams.

Each team had three racers, each with four horses pulling a chariot. Although they occasionally had two drivers, the most impressive sight was the ten-horse chariot which made frequent appearances. The best seats were in the corners, which often saw racers thrown from their chariots.

Thoughts for the day

A cool fall day.

My phlebotomy was successful. It took over an hour with the poor nurse having to use 5 large syringes to get the blood. The vacuum bottle was a bust. I’m glad I brought cookies for the nurses in the infusion room. They were spectacular. My nurse told me she was going to be sore from the pulling of the syringes. She said her pre-teen boys were complaining about pain from gym pushups, and now she understands. She had one hand to hold the needle in and the other to pull the plunger on the syringe at a pressure enough to get blood, but not too much to collapse the vein. True dedication.

While I’m cautious, I really want this election season to end. Commercials are driving me up the wall. Then the non-stop craziness until Jan. 20th.

Random Thoughts…

Teller (of the magic act Penn & Teller) has legally changed his full name to just “Teller” and has a passport in that name.

The 2nd richest man in history was Augustus Caesar, with an estimated net worth of about $4.6 Trillion (today’s dollars, after inflation), about 25% of the world’s economic output then.

Blond hair in humans developed only 11,000 years ago as an evolutionary response to the lack of sunlight in Northern Europe to enable more Vitamin D synthesis.

The blinking light atop the Capitol Records Building spells out the word “Hollywood” in Morse code, and has done so since the building’s opening in 1956.

Ancient Roman Life

Emperors would show up as celebrities in Roman baths

It may not be surprising that all sorts of diseases were easily contracted by Roman baths. However, this didn’t stop the emperors from going to the baths, where they were treated like celebrities. It was also a chance to meet people and make yourself known.

The emperors could hire a team of people to take care of all the work for them. They carried their robes and rubbed olive oil on their skin. Then, they would use a strigil tool to scrape it off.

Historic Events

1517 - ccording to tradition, Martin Luther posted on a church door in Wittenberg, Germany, his Ninety-five Theses, a manifesto that turned a protest about an indulgence scandal into the Protestant Reformation.

1968 - U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson ordered an end to American bombing in North Vietnam.

1962 - The American psychological thriller What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, a late-career triumph for both Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, was released in American theatres.

1941 - After nearly 15 years of work, the Mount Rushmore National Memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota was completed; the colossal sculpture features the heads of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.

1864 - Nevada became the 36th state of the United States.
