Thoughts for the day

No moisture yesterday. Maybe today?

I have had many a crown…on my teeth. I got one crown today on a front tooth. Word to the wise: They are very expensive. Somehow my old dentist hadn’t even seen the cavity. After an hour + of work, he saved the tooth for a mere $2,200.

I had a nice phone conversation with my buddy Julius, from Tuba City. We caught up on a lot of the people from our Shonto,Tonalea, and Tuba days. We both agreed that we are getting older and don’t get as excited about long drives anymore. Good catchup time.

The Maurya Empire: India ©Dharma from Sadao, Thailand on Wikimedia

Despite ruling millions and shaping a vast region's future, the Maurya Empire often fades into the background of global history discussions. Its cities thrived, its administration rivaled Rome's, and Emperor Ashoka championed peace after brutal conquest. Still, this civilization remains one the world has quietly forgotten.

Misunderstood History…

The Boston Tea Party Wasn’t About High Taxes ©wikimedia

Most people think the Boston Tea Party was a protest against the high British taxes. In reality, the Tea Act of 1773 actually lowered the price of tea.
The real issue? The British East India Company's monopoly on tea sales.
Colonists feared economic control and a loss of local business, not just taxation. They weren’t mad about paying taxes—they were mad about who was benefiting from them.
This event was more about corporate power than political rebellion.

Do you remember making May Day baskets and giving them to friends by ringing the doorbell and leaving before anyone answered?

Thoughts for the day

The day started out sunny, then a thunderstorm moved in. Lightning is only a few miles away, just waiting for the rain to start. Moisture is much needed.

All executive orders are not law, and may only last during that President’s term. For me, many of Biden’s Executive Orders brought a smile and an good feeling. Trump has rescinded Biden’s order to rename Columbus Day to Indigenous People’s Day. Now it’s back to Columbus Day, honoring a sailor who got lost, brought disease, and never put his foot on any of America’s soil.

I got a much-needed pedicure this morning. My regular lady was not there, but the one who gave me the pedicure did a very good job. My whole body always feels better after each pedicure.

The Etruscans: Italy ©Chappsnet on Wikimedia

Before Rome, the Etruscans shaped Italy’s early development, influencing Roman art, politics, and religion. They built vast cities and created beautiful frescoes. Why are their contributions so often overshadowed by Rome? Perhaps it’s time to recognize their role in shaping Italy’s rise.

Taught in High School but not true…

Pluto is a planet

I take this one personally. Pluto will always have my heart as the 9th planet in our solar system. Scientists, on the other hand, demoted Pluto to a dwarf planet in 2006. Three things are needed to be considered a planet: it must be round, it must orbit the sun, and it must have cleared its orbit of debris. Pluto is not a cleaner, apparently.

Thoughts for the day

I got my quarterly shot to stop prostate cancer. All good.

The blue sky and lack of wind make it a great day.

FDR was the first to mark ‘the first 100 days’ for Presidents.  He did it to get a jump on his New Deal Plan. Today marks Trump’s first 100 days. In that time, he has really shaken up the country. Biden signed 160 in his 4 years as President. Trump has signed 137 so far and there is little end in sight. Trump’s approval ratings of every thing he has done continue to fall.

The Parthians: Iran ©M0tty on Wikimedia

The Parthians ruled ancient Iran from 247 BCE to 224 CE, standing in the way of Roman expansion. They were masters of cavalry, using hit-and-run tactics to battle the Romans. Lastly, their empire was an important cultural and military force that often goes unnoticed in history.

Taught in High School but not true…

The Nile is the only river that flows north

Rivers follow gravity and flow downhill, not their compass. The Lena River in Russia, the St. Johns River in Florida, and the Red River that flows between the U.S. and Canada are all rivers that flow downhill in a northern trajectory.
