A chilly Sunday here in Flagstaff. A few flurries were in the air around 10am, but then the sky cleared up and it was windy and cold. The 30mph gusts are supposed to be bringing in our first big winter storm. We made it to 32° but the wind chill dropped that a good 10 degrees. Anticipation is all around. We need the moisture. We really need the moisture. No one is looking forward to the snow plows. They use chemicals on most of the main roads which stain our cars until washed. The local neighborhoods get snow plows. The snow plow makes two passes on residential streets. Each pass will pile snow onto sidewalks and driveways. If we get the 18-24” they are predicting, we may be trapped in our driveways until May. It’s always a hard call when it comes to cleaning sidewalks and driveways. Do you do it as it is piling up, so it never gets too deep, or do you wait until it ends and deal with the huge amount of snow to move. The newspaper will soon be filled with angry letters from residents on how they spent an hour or more clearing their sidewalk and driveway—by a city ordinance—and then the snow plow came and put a huge pile of ice on their work. The city will respond with an explanation of the cost of snow removal, the tight city budget, and how they are doing the best they can. Well, as my mother used to say—sometimes your best is just not good enough. It sounds cruel, but she meant it with love and encouragement. Many mountain towns in real mountain states do not have the problems that Flagstaff has with snow removal. If they did places like Aspen, Vail, Park City, and Stowe would not have a ski business. So we all prepare for Flagstaff’s first big storm. Knowing that travel will be difficult. Knowing that someday it will melt. Knowing that it will help our thirsty forest. Knowing that the city will somehow muddle though. I can deal with all of it but the wind.
I started decorating today, but delayed putting stuff outside. Probably not a smart move if the storm comes, but I just couldn’t stand to be on a ladder, in all that wind. I also started my Christmas letter. As I reviewed my daily planner, it was a good year. Lots of great lunches with friends, no major health problems, no disasters in my finances.
Now for the big question of the next decade. How will we say 2010? My grandfather used to tell stories about life in early nineteen hundreds—it was always nineteen aught seven or nineteen aught nine. The big decision in 2001 was how to say it. Was it going to be ‘twenty aught one’, ‘twenty oh one’, ‘two-thousand one’, or something else? Well we all know what one turned out. Now it’s time to wonder again. Will it be ‘twenty-ten’, ‘two-thousand-ten’ or something else? That decision we made in 2001 set the pace for nine years. This decision will set the pace for the remainder of the century. My money is on ‘twenty-ten’…it is short, easy to say, and follows the pattern of the previous centuries. But then, my money was on Obama ending the Iraq and Afghan Wars in twenty aught nine.

Winter is certainly trying to hit Flagstaff. I got up this morning to 13° and the high only made it to 33°. The sky sure looks like snow is coming. The 30mph gusts made the temperature feel a whole lot colder. I didn’t spend much time outside today, but the time I did was not that enjoyable. The weather bureau issued a severe winter watch for Monday and Tuesday. They are saying we can expect 12-18” of snow here in Flagstaff and the Peaks will get about 24”. They also say that it may start snowing on Sunday. Well, I love snow. The forest needs the moisture, so I guess it’s time to batten down the hatches, be sure the fridge has milk, eggs, and other essentials. This is another time that I am so glad that I’m retired and don’t have to be out and about.
I was channel surfing and found a story on CNN of young inner city blacks from NY who are in a program to travel to the shanty towns of South Africa to volunteer and too learn about other cultures. “Journey for Change” sure opened some eyes. While I did visit Sowerto, I was in a van. We ate lunch there, in an outdoor restaurant that was nice, but was not up to the American standard of sanitation. The 30 Black kids volunteered time and energy in the shanty town, meeting people who have so little. They spent two weeks there and did get to go on a safari. More importantly these kids now have to do volunteer work for a year here in the states. Not all the kids have been able to raise their grades or do better in school. But they all have had a chance to do better. Those who want to see the program can click here

I spent this afternoon working on my African trip videos. I’m far from being finished, but I did get some up on Facebook. One is live video of hippos. It was taken several different times, but shows them in the water and amazingly out of the water. One is animal pics including the Big 5 and some of the other animals of the bush. The last one is pics from in and around Cape Town. All have good music to go with them. While in Cape Town, I heard a street band called “Abonwabisi Brothers”. They are 11 guys who sing a cappella at the huge Waterfront Mall. You get to listen to them while watching all the videos. I will be adding some more videos a little later, but figured I could get some up sooner than later. I hope you enjoy them, and feel free to leave comments. They are not Hollywood productions, but they are fun to make. One last thing about the videos, they are much better when viewed ‘full screen’ which is usually a rectangular TV screen at the bottom right of each video.
That pesky high front in Utah kept us pretty cool today. The high of 40° did not feel like 40°. With the gusts that reached 25mph, it felt about 8-10° cooler. When I got up about 6am it was only 12°, much cooler than I enjoy. I am also pretty sure that the high was only there for about 2 or 3 nanoseconds—just enough to move the mercury. Most of the day was in the low 30° range. It is December after all and we are at 7000+ feet, so this shouldn’t sound like complaining. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Mary Jo Coady, 44, of Methuen, said she noticed the image on the iron Sunday, weeks after the last time it was used, and it helped to reaffirm her Catholic faith following her split from her husband and economic troubles, the (North Andover, Mass.) Eagle-Tribune reported Monday. "I see his eyes, his nose, his whole face and I was like, 'That's Jesus looking at us,'" Coady said. "It just gave me a sign that life is going to be good," she said. "I think he's listening." Coady said the image even affected her skeptical-minded daughters, Melody, 21, and Alison, 20. "They wouldn't believe this if it hit them in the head, and they were like, 'Mom, that's Jesus looking at us,'" Coady said. Coady said she's retiring the iron the preserve the image and will buy a new one.

I spent this afternoon working on my African trip videos. I’m far from being finished, but I did get some up on Facebook. One is live video of hippos. It was taken several different times, but shows them in the water and amazingly out of the water. One is animal pics including the Big 5 and some of the other animals of the bush. The last one is pics from in and around Cape Town. All have good music to go with them. While in Cape Town, I heard a street band called “Abonwabisi Brothers”. They are 11 guys who sing a cappella at the huge Waterfront Mall. You get to listen to them while watching all the videos. I will be adding some more videos a little later, but figured I could get some up sooner than later. I hope you enjoy them, and feel free to leave comments. They are not Hollywood productions, but they are fun to make. One last thing about the videos, they are much better when viewed ‘full screen’ which is usually a rectangular TV screen at the bottom right of each video.
That pesky high front in Utah kept us pretty cool today. The high of 40° did not feel like 40°. With the gusts that reached 25mph, it felt about 8-10° cooler. When I got up about 6am it was only 12°, much cooler than I enjoy. I am also pretty sure that the high was only there for about 2 or 3 nanoseconds—just enough to move the mercury. Most of the day was in the low 30° range. It is December after all and we are at 7000+ feet, so this shouldn’t sound like complaining. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

What an amazing day. Jerry picked me up about 6:15 this morning and we were off to TCBS. It sure isn’t the Tuba Boarding I remember. It is a beautiful school. Both Jerry and I were honored at the event. Former student Pete Zah gave a great speech. Some of my former students then took us on a tour. Got to hug and shake hands with many, many, many teachers, and see many students, who surprisingly remembered me. The school now has the some very up-to-date technology in every classroom. That alone made the trip worthwhile. After waiting over 100 years, TCBS now has its own real gym—one big enough to hold all 1200 students in the bleachers. It was strange to see how much older most of the teachers I knew have gotten in the three years since I have been there. It was a great visit. Very nice to see how positive and happy most of the staff is, and seeing that while many things change, some never do. I was very disappointed to see that the tenants in the house I lived in for about 15 years have let the beautiful lawn, trees and flowers go to waste. I really enjoyed the lawn, the trees, and the flowerbeds. The new tenants obviously didn’t. I am really glad I took the day to do this. I was also very glad that I could walk out of the school, get in a vehicle, and return to my retirement.
Tuba was a little chilly all day today. The cold wind didn’t help much. The weather guy says Tuba made it to 38°. It was nice that the wind did not have very much sand in the air. Flag was also cool. It only got to 34° and as I got in the car this morning, it was only 13°. The wind dropped the temperature here by about 10°. Our strongest winter storm so far is on the way. It is scheduled to hit us Monday.

Busy, busy, busy…and not with Christmas. I was busy at medical places today. Got my temporary cap early this morning and then had stitches removed from my nose job this afternoon. Both went very well. Living in a small town, I have to wait two weeks, maybe, to get my permanent cap. If it doesn’t come in the 17th I have to wait until after Christmas break. Here’s hoping it comes in by the 17th. The dentist put in a shiny silver temporary cap. Something about it being on a smaller tooth and it would work better than a plastic one. It only shows when I have a wide smile. Not the kind of bling I was hoping for, good it’s only temporary.
Tomorrow will be another big day. Tuba Boarding is holding its first open house since the new school opened. I got an invite on Monday, another on Tuesday, and another today. Then I got a phone call today to be sure I was coming. I called my old principal, and he too is going, so we will take off together tomorrow morning at 6:30am. This will be my third trip to Tuba since I retired. The other two were right after I retired, when I worked at the Cross Country Meet and Wrestling Tourney. I haven’t been there since the major construction started up after a three year stoppage. We all change as time passes. Tuba was a great experience. It will be strange to go back. Seeing the new school should provide some closure. It will also be good to see Jerry again. We only see each other occasionally—usually at Home Depot or some other store. This will give us time to catch up on what’s been happening. The last time I checked it’s still takes a little over an hour to get to Tuba and about the same amount of time to get back. Lots of time for conversation.
While I was out and about, it was a very cool (48°) with a fairly good 20mph wind, which dropped the temperature to feel more like 38°. The sky is still clear and no moisture is in the forecast. . ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Officials at an Illinois zoo said the facility's gift shops will soon be selling necklace pendants made from dried reindeer dung. The Miller Park Zoo in Bloomington said the Magical Reindeer Gem necklaces, which go on sale Friday for $15 each, were inspired by tree ornaments made from the same substance that went on sale at the zoo last year, The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reported.
"We kept hearing from people who were buying the ornaments,
'Do you have any jewelry?'" said Susie Ohley, spokeswoman for the Miller Park Zoological Society. "We thought we would make them available for the big shopping day," she said of the launch Friday, the largest shopping day of the year. "It may be silly, but it not only brings in money and support to the zoo, (but) it brings people smiles."
Ohley said the zoo expects to make as much as $16,500 from sales of the ornaments and necklaces during the holiday season.

I did some basic cleaning today, in preparation for putting up Christmas. I just have way too much stuff. I really need to get rid of some of it, but every time I start to toss, I think, “I may need that”. I really should finish that sentence with…”someday, for one time, in the next two decades.” I can feel a ‘toss out’ day coming and none too soon. My other choice seems to be to clean out one of the rooms I have, load it with shelving, and put the ‘good’ stuff on the shelves so I can enjoy it. Maybe then I can ‘toss’ some of the ‘not-so-good’ stuff. Over the years I collected a lot of art from the many schools where I worked. It is all unique. It is all ‘folk-art’ and while not being extremely valuable, it sure reminds me of the great time I had while I worked at each school. I enjoy looking at it. It just needs to take up a lot less room.
Obama finally made his decision on Afghanistan. We will continue to send young soldiers into harm’s way. It is so hard for me to understand how this is going to change anything. The Taliban is not a country. In fact, Afghanistan is hardly a country. Many have tried for years to make Afghanistan a country. No other country has been able to accomplish this. No person has risen from the populous to lead this land area. It is still run by local leaders who want to keep their own valley, and don’t want another valley. From what I can tell, the local valley leaders don’t like the Taliban. They threaten the peace in their valley. Many of these leaders don’t like us either, because we also bring harm to their valley. It seems to me that until some local leader rises to grab the attention of everyone in the many valleys, the fighting will continue.
After listening to Obama, I have to wonder what will happen in the next months. Our Military is currently made up of volunteers. I am sure that if the military was made up by draftees, our country’s response would be much different. Obama did not, and cannot, put a face on the Taliban. They are fighters from many countries who are not that well organized. They are also volunteers. They are willing to lay down their lives for their perceived cause. Our military—along with other militaries—seem to be doing the same. And let us not forget, it was not Afghanistan, the country, that attacked us. It was the rowdies, the crazies, the messed up. Wherever they live, wherever they plot and plan, wherever they kill, they do need to be stopped. Finding them is the problem. They don’t wear a uniform, they don’t march in parades, and they don’t have a tattoo that identifies them. Our military must be very careful not to kill innocents, not to torture, and not to intimidate the locals. Otherwise all the healing that Obama has brought to this country and all he has done to repair our world image will be lost. If our military under Obama’s watch does any of these things, I doubt that the world be ready to trust us—ever again. Tonight’s speech will change many people’s lives. It is not what I thought I would hear when he was elected. Time will tell if this means that he will be a one-term President. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Til death do us part? The vow would really hold true in California if a Sacramento Web designer gets his way. John Marcotte wants to put a measure on the ballot next year to ban divorce in California. The effort is meant to be a satirical statement after California voters outlawed gay marriage in 2008, largely on the argument that a ban is needed to protect the sanctity of traditional marriage. If that's the case, then Marcotte reasons voters should have no problem banning divorce.
"Since California has decided to protect traditional marriage, I think it would be hypocritical of us not to sacrifice some of our own rights to protect traditional marriage even more," the 38-year-old married father of two said.
Marcotte needs 694,354 valid signatures by March 22, a high hurdle in a state where the typical petition drive costs millions of dollars. Even if his proposed constitutional amendment made next year's ballot, it's not clear how voters would react. Nationwide, about half of all marriages end in divorce. Prentice said proponents of traditional marriage only seek to strengthen the one man-one woman union. "That's where our intention begins and ends," he said.

I did some basic cleaning today, in preparation for putting up Christmas. I just have way too much stuff. I really need to get rid of some of it, but every time I start to toss, I think, “I may need that”. I really should finish that sentence with…”someday, for one time, in the next two decades.” I can feel a ‘toss out’ day coming and none too soon. My other choice seems to be to clean out one of the rooms I have, load it with shelving, and put the ‘good’ stuff on the shelves so I can enjoy it. Maybe then I can ‘toss’ some of the ‘not-so-good’ stuff. Over the years I collected a lot of art from the many schools where I worked. It is all unique. It is all ‘folk-art’ and while not being extremely valuable, it sure reminds me of the great time I had while I worked at each school. I enjoy looking at it. It just needs to take up a lot less room.
Obama finally made his decision on Afghanistan. We will continue to send young soldiers into harm’s way. It is so hard for me to understand how this is going to change anything. The Taliban is not a country. In fact, Afghanistan is hardly a country. Many have tried for years to make Afghanistan a country. No other country has been able to accomplish this. No person has risen from the populous to lead this land area. It is still run by local leaders who want to keep their own valley, and don’t want another valley. From what I can tell, the local valley leaders don’t like the Taliban. They threaten the peace in their valley. Many of these leaders don’t like us either, because we also bring harm to their valley. It seems to me that until some local leader rises to grab the attention of everyone in the many valleys, the fighting will continue.
After listening to Obama, I have to wonder what will happen in the next months. Our Military is currently made up of volunteers. I am sure that if the military was made up by draftees, our country’s response would be much different. Obama did not, and cannot, put a face on the Taliban. They are fighters from many countries who are not that well organized. They are also volunteers. They are willing to lay down their lives for their perceived cause. Our military—along with other militaries—seem to be doing the same. And let us not forget, it was not Afghanistan, the country, that attacked us. It was the rowdies, the crazies, the messed up. Wherever they live, wherever they plot and plan, wherever they kill, they do need to be stopped. Finding them is the problem. They don’t wear a uniform, they don’t march in parades, and they don’t have a tattoo that identifies them. Our military must be very careful not to kill innocents, not to torture, and not to intimidate the locals. Otherwise all the healing that Obama has brought to this country and all he has done to repair our world image will be lost. If our military under Obama’s watch does any of these things, I doubt that the world be ready to trust us—ever again. Tonight’s speech will change many people’s lives. It is not what I thought I would hear when he was elected. Time will tell if this means that he will be a one-term President. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Til death do us part? The vow would really hold true in California if a Sacramento Web designer gets his way. John Marcotte wants to put a measure on the ballot next year to ban divorce in California. The effort is meant to be a satirical statement after California voters outlawed gay marriage in 2008, largely on the argument that a ban is needed to protect the sanctity of traditional marriage. If that's the case, then Marcotte reasons voters should have no problem banning divorce.
"Since California has decided to protect traditional marriage, I think it would be hypocritical of us not to sacrifice some of our own rights to protect traditional marriage even more," the 38-year-old married father of two said.
Marcotte needs 694,354 valid signatures by March 22, a high hurdle in a state where the typical petition drive costs millions of dollars. Even if his proposed constitutional amendment made next year's ballot, it's not clear how voters would react. Nationwide, about half of all marriages end in divorce. Prentice said proponents of traditional marriage only seek to strengthen the one man-one woman union. "That's where our intention begins and ends," he said.

I got a call from Bob, my 76 yr. old friend in Denver. He had knee surgery a couple of weeks ago and is slow on the mend. At least that’s what he says. He says the doctors and physical therapists say is right on schedule. He is a 14Ker—climbed the peaks over 14K in Colorado, and is not the type to be inactive, or in this case, less active. I’m sure it is tough for him.
I had lunch today with our retirement group. We shared Thanksgiving stories and had a good lunch at Red Lobster.
Flagstaff is having one of its driest years in recorded history. The record was set in 1942 and right now we are over an inch lower than that record. How disturbing. While some moisture is expected during December, it probably won’t be enough to stop us from setting a new record. The entire ecosystem here is in trouble. Our Aspen trees are in trouble this year, our pinon trees have been in trouble for a couple of years, our ponderosa may be next. I sure hope this all ends soon. It has taken about 10 years for all this damage; it will take at least that long for our forest to recover. Right now, ten years of above average rainfall seems as impossible as ten years of below average rainfall.

A man was walking in the park one day when he came upon a cocoon with a small opening. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through the little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It looked like it had gotten as far as it could, so the man decided to help the butterfly. He used his pocketknife and snipped the remaining bit of the cocoon.
The butterfly then emerged easily, but something was strange. The butterfly had a swollen body and shriveled wings. The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected at any moment the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time. Neither happened. In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and deformed wings. It was never able to fly.
What the man in his kindness and haste did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to emerge was natural. It was nature's way of forcing fluid from its body into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom. Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives.
If we were allowed to go through life without any obstacles, we would be crippled. We would not be as strong as what we could have been. And we could never fly.

On Thanksgiving, at least, Marty Van Ness is everyone's mother as she dispenses sage (and savory) advice from Butterball's Talk-Line headquarters in Naperville, Ill., the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Wednesday. Van Ness has been on the Talk-Line for 18 years and says she has heard it all in that span. "The most distressed calls are when someone has mishandled the turkey," Van Ness told the newspaper. "They call because they think they have a safety issue, and they want me to tell them, 'You'll be fine.'" She says she tells callers who have made too a big mess of the Thanksgiving feast to salvage the meal that she sympathizes, and wishes them better luck for next year.
"People are relieved they have someone to talk to who will hear them, and not judge them," she told the Journal Sentinel. "I would never tell them they're stupid. Everyone makes mistakes."

OMG, I went to bed with snow just starting to stick to the ground. Got up this morning, and it was still there. What a great site. The huge Ponderosa just outside second floor my bedroom had snow on every branch. The bird feeders also had snow on them. We only got about an inch that stuck here, but it was enough to set the mood. The day stayed fairly cool—only got to 35°--and that was enough to melt the snow on the sidewalk and street, but left some still on the ground. We may get a little more snow tonight. I’m sure the ‘big one’ is waiting until I’m ready to head for Chicago. I do enjoy the snow, and did throw a few wet snowballs today—at trees. I tried to start some snowball fights with my Facebook friends, but alas, they didn’t throw any back.
I worked on a couple of movies of my trip to Africa. I still haven’t gotten a real theme. We did so much, saw so much, and had such a variety of experiences; it is hard to compile them. I did get some good hippo videos—both in the water and out of the water. We were always in a boat when we saw them, and I was reminded how hard they are to see when they are under water. I’m glad our small boats had a good operator or I might not be writing this. When the hippo heads stick up, you still don’t see their bodies right away. We saw some out of water which is very unusual during daylight. Their thick skin is very sensitive and burns easily. So they usually stay in the water during daylight and eat their grass at night. We saw one group about 9 in the morning, another group about 4 in the afternoon. They are such a fascinating animal. An adult weighs between 1.5 and 3.5 tons. They can outrun man. This ‘river horse’ is one of the most aggressive animals on earth and considered the most ferocious in Africa. It is also the third largest land animal—just behind the elephant and rhino. Strange it isn’t one of the Big 5 or that Africa advertizes the Big 6.

A Devon, PA girl determined to make a difference in the fight against cancer after losing her grandfather has received a prestigious award for her efforts.
Fourteen-year-old Carly Houlahan and her sister Molly turned to bees to raise money for cancer research. And that's how "Hives for Lives" was born:
"We have been bee keepers since we were about 5 and 7. My grandmother taught us all we know. Basically we were sitting around and they told us they had extra honey. Molly suggested we sell it for charity and I said ‘How about cancer?’"
So the girls went door to door selling the honey. Their effort grew the following year with a 1,000 pound donation of honey. They formed their own company and to date have raised $150,000. They have local "helper bees” who help supply honey all over the country:
"Kids really can do anything. It sounds a little cheesy but they really can!"
She received a $3,000 college scholarship in Guardian's 2009 "Going Places" Entrepreneurship Award

Mary Beth Collins, the executive director of Dane County Court Appointed Special Advocates, said Dave Bowden of Market Street Diner created the gingerbread man as part of the "Gingerbread Cookie Factory" fundraiser at the Hilldale Mall in Madison, WISC-TV, Madison, reported. "This was a goal he had," Collins said. "To create the world's tallest gingerbread man. So Dane County CASA approached him to see if he would do it, and he agreed, and here we are today." The cookie factory, which will be open the first three Saturdays in December, will allow children to decorate their own gingerbread cookies to raise funds for CASA, which advocates for children in abusive situations.

The holiday weekend is just slipping by. We have been told to prepare for a small winter storm. It isn’t here yet and I guess I’m ready. An inch or two of snow will certainly put me in the holiday mood. It isn’t here yet, and the way the weather people are in our little community, it may not even happen. It did get up to 44° today, there was some wind, some clouds, and it looked like it might snow, but alas, not yet.
I’m healing quite well from my minor surgery. I keep it covered and keep it moist with Vaseline. It is starting to look a lot better. The bandage still has a small stain, but nothing like the first day. Guess I’ll be ready to lose the stitches on Wednesday. Actually I am ready to lose the little buggers right now, but I guess my nose needs a few more days.
I worked on some of my African video today. I have a cute movie of elephants that lasts way too long. All together it’s about ten minutes. Elephants are so amazing. They are huge. They are so family-oriented. They love the water, and they like playing. We were so lucky to have seen a huge herd of them walking to and then playing in the water. I also had video of smaller parades of elephants. I didn’t do any video while riding the elephant, but got some nice still shots. I still haven’t figured out how to combine still shots and video yet. That’s my next task.

Forest Park resident Betty Pritchard understands the concept of “special needs.” When her great grand-nephew, Owen Gilliam, was born with hydrocephalus almost two years ago, it was essential that his body temperature remain stable. To achieve this, his head needed to stay warm. But because his head was enlarged, ready-made baby hats were too small.
Owen’s mother, Sara, and her mother began making hats for him from soft, stretchy cotton fabric, and quickly realized that other babies with hydrocephalus had “special needs” too. They started a web site, and soon had a network of volunteers to help sew the hats.
Pritchard, a member of Forest Park Women’s Club, got club members involved in the charity, which now sends hats to hospitals all over the country. This compassionate effort is one of several community service projects the club has undertaken.
“We’ve been making hats for about 18 months now, and have made over 100,” Pritchard said. “We send them to my niece (Sara’s mother) in New Harmony, Indiana, and she distributes them.”
Pritchard said that hydrocephalus occurs in approximately one out of 500 births.
The G.O. Hats organization (named for Owen Gilliam) is based in the Gilliams’ home town of St. Louis, Missouri. It is growing steadily – which is also true of Owen, who is happily overcoming the obstacles his condition presents.

NEW YORK - A New York pub owner said his Thanksgiving turkeys are soaked in vodka, covered in vodka gravy and prepared with reservoirs for vodka shots. Paul Hurley, owner of O'Casey's Tavern, said the booze turkey, which is injected with 100-proof Georgi vodka before cooking, was inspired by his mother 15 years ago in Ireland, the New York Post reported Monday. "On Christmas, my mom said, 'Why not try some vodka in the turkey?'" Hurley said. Paul Loftus, a chef at the restaurant, said a lot of the alcohol from the vodka evaporates in the oven, so extra vodka is added to the gravy. He said the turkey is also served with a reservoir filled with a fruit-flavored vodka shot and a straw. Hurley said the $29.95 meal comes with a taxi cab ride to anywhere in New York's Manhattan borough.

The holiday weekend is just slipping by. We have been told to prepare for a small winter storm. It isn’t here yet and I guess I’m ready. An inch or two of snow will certainly put me in the holiday mood. It isn’t here yet, and the way the weather people are in our little community, it may not even happen. It did get up to 44° today, there was some wind, some clouds, and it looked like it might snow, but alas, not yet.
I’m healing quite well from my minor surgery. I keep it covered and keep it moist with Vaseline. It is starting to look a lot better. The bandage still has a small stain, but nothing like the first day. Guess I’ll be ready to lose the stitches on Wednesday. Actually I am ready to lose the little buggers right now, but I guess my nose needs a few more days.
I worked on some of my African video today. I have a cute movie of elephants that lasts way too long. All together it’s about ten minutes. Elephants are so amazing. They are huge. They are so family-oriented. They love the water, and they like playing. We were so lucky to have seen a huge herd of them walking to and then playing in the water. I also had video of smaller parades of elephants. I didn’t do any video while riding the elephant, but got some nice still shots. I still haven’t figured out how to combine still shots and video yet. That’s my next task.

Forest Park resident Betty Pritchard understands the concept of “special needs.” When her great grand-nephew, Owen Gilliam, was born with hydrocephalus almost two years ago, it was essential that his body temperature remain stable. To achieve this, his head needed to stay warm. But because his head was enlarged, ready-made baby hats were too small.
Owen’s mother, Sara, and her mother began making hats for him from soft, stretchy cotton fabric, and quickly realized that other babies with hydrocephalus had “special needs” too. They started a web site, and soon had a network of volunteers to help sew the hats.
Pritchard, a member of Forest Park Women’s Club, got club members involved in the charity, which now sends hats to hospitals all over the country. This compassionate effort is one of several community service projects the club has undertaken.
“We’ve been making hats for about 18 months now, and have made over 100,” Pritchard said. “We send them to my niece (Sara’s mother) in New Harmony, Indiana, and she distributes them.”
Pritchard said that hydrocephalus occurs in approximately one out of 500 births.
The G.O. Hats organization (named for Owen Gilliam) is based in the Gilliams’ home town of St. Louis, Missouri. It is growing steadily – which is also true of Owen, who is happily overcoming the obstacles his condition presents.

Black Friday. I didn’t help out merchants today. I drove by a couple of stores but the parking lots were full and I didn’t really have to buy anything today. Just didn’t want to deal with the crowds. While yesterday’s paper was huge—filled with ads—there was nothing on sale today that I wanted, needed, or was worth the hassle.

Lan Yin "Eiko" Tsai, attired in a classy dress and pumps, is a standout among the spandex-clad crowd at New Jersey's City to Shore, a 150-mile bike ride that benefits multiple sclerosis research. Appearances, however, can be deceiving. The spry, petite 84-year old has been biking the event for the past 26 years, and this is her normal riding uniform.
Riding a vintage one-speed purple bicycle outfitted with a wire basket on the front that holds her possessions, Tsai certainly makes a memorable splash. But it is her spirit of volunteerism and determination, spanning over two decades, that makes her a venerable symbol of the event.
It all started when Tsai began to work in a hospital many years ago. A native of Taiwan, she was trained in Japan in the art of shiatsu massage. So while working at the hospital, "I started to put my hands where they hurt," she says. Tsai began regularly giving massages to cancer patients, until one day, about 26 years ago, she massaged a patient with MS.
