The very unpredictable Cardinals beat the Packers today. The Cards had lost to the Pack twice this year. The team is so unpredictable they may be in the Super Bowl, again. They belong in Arizona, they only play well when it is a ‘do or die’ situation, much like our non-elected governor, and sadly the elected state legislature. The Cards blew a chance for the division title, but knew they would be a wild card, so no big deal. Our state is still in a budget crisis, but no big deal, just close more government run offices and parks and sell the buildings to others. No big deal, they still get paid. I guess when the legislature and the governor don’t get paid, then they will get busy and find a solution. Yep, the Cardinals want those playoff paychecks so they will keep winning.

For almost two years the media has avoided discussing the underlying issues of Race in this country. Much of the conservative media has found fault with our President, and the liberal media acts like his background doesn’t matter. I fear that is all about to end. It is coming out that many power brokers in our Nation’s capital had lots to say about Obama before he was elected. Some is coming out in a new book. So sad. Listening to the apologies to our Commander and Chief seem so empty. The comments are hardly out of context, misunderstood, or a poor choice of words. They are racist, plain and simple. I am sure that if Mrs. Clinton had been elected, these same ‘leaders’ would now be in the news for comments they made about her during her campaign. Overall, our country voted for change. We got a good start, but the need for change is far from over. Closeted bigots need to lose their power and our country needs to move forward.

Everything East of Kansas seems to be suffering with the cold. A big storm that was expected to reach the City [NYC] this weekend, but never made it. While I sometimes complain about our cold or snow, it ain’t nuttin’ compared to what many have to deal with day after day, every winter. It sure makes Flagstaff very tolerable. Our snow and cold comes and goes, our cold weather comes and goes. We don’t have to wait for April or May for any warm days. The warm days we get happen all the time and we seldom drop into the negative degrees, even at night. A couple of friends in different parts of Florida are freakin’ out. Temperatures are dropping below 32° and few people have warm clothes and some don’t have furnaces. Flag keeps looking really good. Our low of 14° and high of 39° worked for me…I have warm clothes…I have heat…I know it’s winter…I know it’s expected.

PORT ORANGE, Fla. - A 91-year-old man who crashed his car into a popular Florida restaurant proceeded to sit down and order breakfast near his vehicle, authorities said.

Tonya Gilardi, a spokeswoman for Port Orange Fire, said Charles Pierce was not injured when he crashed his car into the Biscuits 'N' Gravy restaurant Monday morning but another customer was treated for minor injuries at Halifax Health Medical Center in Port Orange, the Daytona Beach (Fla.) News-Journal reported. "A firefighter told me he sat down and ordered breakfast right after the crash," Gilardi said of Pierce. "He sat close to where the crash occurred so he could keep an eye on his car." Port Orange Assistant Police Chief Wayne Miller said Pierce was attempting to park Monday at the restaurant when he pressed the accelerator "one too many times" and the vehicle slammed through the glass window of the cafe.

Miller said Pierce was issued a citation for careless driving.

I was really lazy today, don’t know why. But I sure enjoy these kinds of days. I figure I didn’t have very many for a lot of years and now I deserve one every once in a while. I watched a couple of old movies, checked in on the football games, and just relaxed.

Gas Prices seem to be a little weird in Flagstaff. The lowest price I have seen is @2.54, but yesterday I saw a high of 2.80. I don’t get why anyone would buy gas at 2.80 when it is 2.54 less than 2 miles away. Back in the day, my dad did have a favorite ‘filling station’. The old guy who ran it knew a lot about cars, would always check your oil, remind you when an inspection sticker was due, wash your windows, and fill the car with gas. Sometimes his gas was a penny or two higher than the competition, but my dad always stuck with the guy. That I understood. There all no more ‘filling stations’, nobody pumps your gas, nobody checks your oil, nobody washes your windows. You don’t even have to see a human when you get gas today. From my point of view, all the stations today just sell gasoline. So why not find the least expensive? There must be some reason these more expensive places stay in business, but it is not from selling gas to me.

To set the record straight: over the past few days several conservative members of Congress have said that the 9-11 attack happened on the Democrat’s watch. It didn’t. Way many in Congress think that 1. People forget the facts, 2. People will believe anything if it is said enough times.

While I was watching movies, Flag seems to have had a decent day. It dropped to a frigid 3° last night, but warmed up to a nice 49° late in the day.

When I got up this morning it was only 10° which may have led to my desire to stay inside all day, in front of the fireplace and TV, and just be lazy.

SOUTHAMPTON, England - British firefighters called to a hospital said they spent 30 minutes using a metal grinder to free a man's penis from a steel pipe. The Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service crew said they were called to England's Southampton General Hospital Tuesday morning to use the 4 1/2-inch grinder to cut through the pipe without damaging the man's sex organ, The Sun reported. Hospital staff said they were unable to remove the pipe without assistance because the blood flow in the man's penis had become restricted and caused him to become aroused. Doctors said the man's penis was bruised and swollen after the operation but he did not suffer any serious or permanent injuries. Firefighters said the man declined to explain how his penis had become stuck in the pipe. "It was a very delicate operation that required a very steady hand and the crew was worried about things getting too hot during the cutting," a Fire and Rescue spokesman said. "It's certainly an unusual call-out and I'm sure the man won't be getting into that situation again."

Technology can drive us all crazy. Today I dropped of a prescription at the local pharmacy. I was told “our system is down”, and that meant they couldn’t fill the script right then. Not a big deal, it is my regular blood pressure medicine and the Dr. had just given me a renewal script. Then I find out that the system has been down since yesterday morning. They had no idea when it would be back up, but were hopeful sometime today. The medical community recommends that we keep all our scripts at one pharmacy allowing the pharmacist to double or triple check for interactions. Actually I thought the insurance company did that too. Had I been sick, and needed an antibiotic I would have to go to another pharmacy. It seems impossible, that in this day and age, when a system crashes, the huge pharmacy network should either have a back-up system, or a way for the local pharmacist to fill the prescription. Guess it is easier to just say “the system is down.” It is a new year, so I have to reach my script deductible before it kicks in. That means that for a couple of months, my regular $2.12 script will cost about $25. I don’t understand it, and I just pay it. I do know that if I have a big medical ‘procedure’ and pass some other magical number in the amount I have paid, any scripts I have and any co-pays are free for the remainder of that year. I guess that’s a good plan. Please, somebody fix heath care so I can benefit more while I am fairly healthy.

Now we all know, Sara Palin had a brain fart. Big deal, we all have them every so often. It turns out that Sara knew she was running against the Obama and Biden. Somehow her brain was always slipping into “Mr. O’Biden”, While Joe is Irish, his family has never been known as O’Biden’s. To prevent a blunder at the debate, she enters, shakes hands with Mr. Biden and quips, “can I call you Joe?” He agrees and she only called him Mr. O’Biden once. For some reason, this is news. So watch out for those pesky brain farts.

We had some fairly good weather today. We only got to 38° but there was little breeze, so a light jacket worked just fine. While I did run some errands today, I also did get some light cleaning done—that means I got out the vacuum cleaner, turned it on and pushed it around the carpet. No furniture was moved, no difficult areas, like under the tables were done. Just a quick run. I also fed the birds, again. They seem to be really hungry. I figure the smart birds migrated long ago, and the ones that are left aren’t very smart and need help finding food. Besides, they are enjoyable to watch.

Tony Kember, 66, chairman of the Dunchurch, England, historical society, said the village's 19th century statue of Lord John Scott was disguised as "The Simpsons" patriarch as part of an annual prank tradition that has previously featured the statue dressed as Harry Potter, Spider-Man, Guy Fawkes and Shrek, The Sun reported. I had my semi-annual check-up with my PCP today. He let me know I am getting older, I am doing well for my age, and that it is time for annual blood tests. All this took an hour. He has an unusual style as a physician. He types everything he says and everything I say into his computer and then he complains that the program doesn’t do what he wants it to do. He is also loves to show his patients that he is up on the very latest. I always leave a little better educated about the medical system in the US and of course, with a better understanding of my own health condition. I’m sure he was very liberal in college, and was probably a pain in the ass to his teachers. You know the kind…he knows more than everyone else around and wants to be sure that everyone knows it. TMI sometimes plays a role. Usually he throws in something about his wife, and her nursing at the hospital. Today he mentioned his small apartment in downtown Flagstaff and how he walks the 1.8 miles to and from work. Then he mentioned that his girl friend lives in Country Club. Hmmm. I don’t know, I don’t need to know, nor do I want to know about his personal life.

Obama talked to the American people, again this afternoon. He didn’t pull any punches. He let the buck stop at his office for the Underwear Bomber for allowing him to get on the plane. He has made changes, and will continue to make changes. He reminded us all that we are at war and that there are people who want us to lose. We have to unite to stop the terrorists. Good point.

Every culture in the world is different in the way the culture handles different situations. A friend of mine, a Navajo, just had a gall bladder operation. She is fine, and I asked her husband if he was taking her flowers. He said he was getting her a balloon and teddy bear, because flowers are too much like a funeral. Interesting. Then I heard the news and the commentary was on why the many non-terrorist Muslims are not speaking out against terrorism. I have a theory…the devote don’t like to tell others how to live their lives. Many cultures, and many religions, believe the same thing. They are usually considered pacifists. They live their lives, and let others live their lives. They will share their beliefs, when asked, but don’t force others to follow their way, nor do they condemn others for not following their beliefs. Changing deep seeded cultural beliefs is not something most people want to tackle.

I thought the 44° today was a little chilly, until I looked at the weather in the middle part of the country. No complaints here in Flagstaff. We are having great weather for January.

Benjamin Herson of Oregon and Jeff Deck of Massachusetts said they were given a $150,000 advance to write "The Great Typo Hunt," which is due out Aug. 3, The (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot reported. The men were sentenced to probation and ordered to stay out of national parks for a year for correcting the grammar on a 70-year-old sign at the Grand Canyon's South Rim during their 2008 cross-country typo trek. They credited the case's publicity with helping them land the book deal. "The overreaction of the government probably helped us a lot in terms of getting this deal," Herson said. "It's one of those true lemonade-out-of-lemons stories."

I am very hard on bed pillows. I don’t know why, but after a year, they are a mess. I need a hard pillow. I like to scrunch it. So each January the pillow business puts good pillows on sale, and there I am, buying two new bed pillows. They are always perfect, until about October, when they start getting too soft. Every year I figure I have gotten one that will last more than a year. I feel the same year after year and am always disappointed. So today was pillow day. I’m set for another year or at least 10 months.

For those of you familiar with the Tuba City area, the highway across Hopi, 264, is closed due to a rock slide. The slide is about 200 yards from the bridge. Thankfully no one was injured. But travel in the area is messed up. Several Hopi’s had their fields damaged. Workers from Coalmine now have to drive through Leupp to get to work in Tuba—a five minute drive is now over an hour.

Flag’s low of 17° quickly rose to a very nice 54° today. A great day for running errands. No jacket required.

I believe news correspondent Brit Hume went down the rabbit hole Sunday. I used to watch him when he was on ABC, and he gave thoughtful reports in numerous issues. He left ABC a few years ago, and I assumed he had retired. Turns out he went to Fox News—a station I almost never watch. He was on a panel on a News (?) Show on Fox. They were discussing Tiger’s fall. His suggestion to Tiger is that he shed his Buddhist Religion and become a Christian, because Christianity offers more forgiveness than other religions. His remarks have been all over the news channels. I just don’t get why a news show would suggest that one religion is better than another. For me, religion is a very personal belief. I have friends from many different religious backgrounds. I listen to their beliefs, and then I see how they live their lives. I don’t try to convert, I don’t try to change them. My belief system works for me, and I assume their system works for them. Too bad that so many others feel that they have the answer and then must coerce others into believing that way.

President Obama looked pissed off today when he talked about the underwear bomber. He laid out what happened, how he is changing things, and showed us that he is on top of this screw-up. He didn’t require that we all have to take our underwear off for TSA. Thank goodness he didn’t follow his predecessor with a knee-jerk reaction. Eight years ago a Brit, with ties to his Jamaican family put a bomb in his shoe and tried to detonate it. The flight crew and passengers stopped him. He is in a Super Max Prison for Life without Parole. Yet, today, every flying passenger at every airport in the US must remove their shoes before going through security. I’m sure it has been good for the loafer shoe business. When shoe removal first started, it was a pain in the butt. Now people just do it, like little robots. It is always interesting to watch the neophyte flyer who is not prepared for this. So, Obama did a good thing. He took his personnel to the wood shed. He then met with the whole group to figure out how to make our flights safer. He then told us what he was doing. He told us that some things will change. We are at war. We need to be prepared, but we don’t need knee-jerk reactions.

MUNCIE, Ind. - An Indiana fifth-grader is in hot water with his grandparents for taking $10,331 from a safe and attempting to distribute it to classmates, authorities said. Delaware County sheriff's deputies said the Selma Elementary School student took the money from a safe at the home where he lives with his custodial grandparents and handed out a little more than $300 to classmates on the bus ride to school before teachers confiscated the cash, the Muncie (Ind.) Star-Press reported Wednesday. "I doubt any of our administrators have experienced this before," Principal Joel Mahaffey said. He declined to comment further on the incident. Deputies said the boy was sent home with his grandmother. They said the money, which was in the sheriff's department's custody, would likely be returned to the family Monday.
Note: They should have lived on the Rez. During my career, similar things happened. One boy, in the mid-70’s, brought 25 $100 bills his parents had in a coffee can, money for a new truck. All was recovered. At least 10 times a student gave a $100 bill to a friend, sometimes for a cute toy. Each time the teacher discovered the money, the parents were happy we were able to recover the money. Kids never understood how much money it really was. It reminds me of the Shel Silverstein Poem where a child trades a dime for a penny because the penny is bigger.

The country I learned about today: it has a 40% unemployment rate, it currently has 23 million people but has the highest birth rate in the world with women having an average of six children, it is about the size of California, it is a Presidential republic with a bicameral legislature, almost 20% of the population lives on less than $1.75US/day, the current country, divided for centuries, became united in the 1990’s, 46% of the population is under 15 years old and 2.7% is over 65, almost 175,000 refugees have moved in—leaving their native country’s turmoil, there are 3 doctors/10,000 people and 6.1 hospital beds per 10,000 people with a life expectancy of 63.7 years, and while compulsory education is the law, the literacy rate is 35% for females and 67% for males.
As we close down our Embassy in Yemen, I realized that I knew nothing about the country and probably could not find it on a map of Africa. It is no wonder that Yemen is another hide out and a recruiting stronghold for terrorists. Youth are always looking for something better, especially when they are living in poverty. Promises sound so good. Action sounds better. It is very easy to paint a world of black and white, with no grays. It is much easier to get youth to fight for a better world for themselves and their families. Yemaen has all the necessary criteria.
As the US and other countries attempt to destroy terrorists in one or two countries, of course the terrorists are going to look for greener pastures. They are terrorist, not idiots. Our foreign policy makers need to stop being shocked when terrorist cells pop up in poverty stricken countries; we need to be there first offering education, and support. The Underwear Bomber, living in the US, born in Nigeria, and trained in Yemen, has shown us again, that youth can sure be vulnerable to radical teachings.
I ran into an old friend today. We had a nice visit in the aisle at Target. His daughter was on a T-ball team I coached back in the 70’s. She is visiting from Mexico. She and her husband moved there last year. They have a house about 45 min from Mexico City. Turns out, it is violent and scary down there just like the newspapers say. She says daytime is fine, but can’t go out after dark. Her in-laws live there and are not in good health, thus their move from the Sunnyside neighborhood to a more dangerous place. Dad is still working for Coco County as a Youth Detention Officer. He is 57 and eligible to retire. He figures the cuts in our state budget will force him out and he will get a better deal. Good luck with that.
Flagstaff had good weather today. We made it to 48° under a clear sky and little breeze. A good day to be out and about. Last night remained in the double digits—only dropped to 16°. Spring must be just around the corner.

WARREN, Mich. - Police in Michigan said a man with a 5-inch knife lodged in his chest walked into a restaurant, called 911, ordered coffee and sat down to wait for paramedics. Warren police said the 52-year-old man told the 911 operator he had been stabbed in Warren and walked half a mile to Bray's Hamburgers in Hazel Park to use the telephone, WDIV-TV, Detroit, reported Tuesday. Restaurant employees said the man then sat down and ordered a coffee while waiting for the ambulance. "It was like out of a movie," said George Mirdita, an employee at the restaurant. "It kind of freaked us all out here. Then, the customers realized it and they were all turning their heads in disgust." Police said the man, who told officers he was stabbed by a mugger for refusing to hand over money, was treated for his injury and is expected to make a full recovery.

Glastonbury, Somerset England: Glastonbury Thorn Day According to tradition, following the crucifixion of Jesus, St Joseph of Arimathea was driven from his home and began a journey of conversion. He traveled to Glastonbury in an attempt to bring Christianity to the Britons. Joseph was the owner of the tomb in which Jesus Christ's body lay from Good Friday till the third day, Easter.
Upon their arrival and tired from the journey, he and his 12 companions laid down to rest. As he did so, he thrust his staff into the hill. When he woke up, the staff had taken root and begun to grow. It flowers every Christmas and every spring. This became the site of the Glastonbury Abbey.
It is said that the original thorn was cut down by a Puritan soldier in 1653 and was blinded when struck in the eye by a splinter.

Elephants in Africa are being slaughtered by poachers. Every place we stayed in Botswana and South Africa had camo-ed out armed guards who spent their days and nights walking the area, looking for poachers. The poachers want nothing but the ivory. They kill the elephant, remove the tusks, and leave the rest. All of that was very disturbing. I just watched an amazing story on 60 Minutes about elephant communication. Many are studying the sounds they make. It was obvious in Africa that the elephants are very social and it is not surprising that their noises were really communication. What was fascinating in the 60 Minutes story is that it has just been learned, within the last 5 years, that there is a whole range of sub-vocalization that we never knew about. The largest land mammal, like the whale, communicate through sounds that humans cannot hear. Fascinating study. It will take decades for us to figure out this new communication. A group from Cornell has already started an Elephant Dictionary for the sounds we can hear. Now they are using technology to add the sounds we can’t hear to this dictionary. Man knows so little about the animals we share this planet with. Science continues to learn more and more, while others look only at the profit motive.

While my football teams were both getting wiped out, I worked on the ice on my front sidewalk. Slowly I am getting through it. It is all drippings off the roof, which freeze and make a thick hump that even ice-melt can’t break up easily. I also made it to the car wash to get the chemicals off the paint on my ride. So I am just about ready for the next snow storm. A clean car and a clean sidewalk should do the trick. The weatherman doesn’t predict any snow for the next seven days. We will have to see if my clean car will change all that weather forecast stuff.

It did drop to 9° last night, and only warmed up to 40° today. The 20mph breeze kept it a little cooler than I like, but not enough to keep me inside.

BOSTON - A Boston mother said her frustration at her 14-year-old son's late night video game playing led her to call police emergency for help in speaking to him. Angela Mejia, 49, said she has been concerned about the amount of time her son spends playing games in the violent "Grand Theft Auto" series and her frustration reached a head when she found him playing at 2:30 a.m. Saturday, hours after he had been instructed to go to bed, the Boston Herald reported. "I woke up in the middle of the night and saw the light on in his bedroom," she said. Mejia said she and her son engaged in an argument that culminated with her unplugging his PlayStation and calling 911. "I called (police) because if you don't respect your mother, what are you going to do in your life?" she said. The mother said police officers responded and were able to convince her son to call it a night. "They (police) were just like, 'Chill out. Go to bed,'" the boy said.

What a great day here in Flagstaff. We made it to 54° according to the weather service, but I only showed 49° on this side of town. Still, a very pleasant day. Since there was basically no breeze, I could spend some time outside, without having to be bundled. It was very nice to be able to enjoy the sunshine, something I have hardly seen since before Christmas. Now it is time to deal with the ice on the sidewalk. I think the warmth is all a trick, since we will be dropping to about 7° tonight. Winter can be so confusing.

MISSOULA, Mont. - Authorities in Montana said a groom will have to walk down the aisle with a monitoring bracelet due to allegations of misconduct at his bachelor party. Missoula police said Jordan B. Iddings, 24, will have to wear the bracelet as a condition of his release from jail while awaiting trial on charges of assault on a peace officer, a felony, and misdemeanor counts of sexual assault, disorderly conduct and assault. Iddings and five other men participating in his bachelor party were arrested Nov. 19.

Iddings allegedly groped a woman at a bar and punched her in the face when she slapped him. The men moved to another bar, where they were refused service for fighting with bartenders, and police approached them while they were shouting profanities outside of the business, investigators allege. Iddings allegedly head-butted an officer during his arrest. Lance Lovell, Iddings' attorney, said his client has been granted permission to travel to Alaska next month to work on a fishing boat until his April trial. However, he will have to wear the monitoring bracelet at all times during his release and submit to random drug and alcohol tests. Ryan Schnabl, a co-defendant in the case, was barred from contact with Iddings, but was granted permission to attend his wedding, which is scheduled for Saturday.
