My Rambling Thoughts
Very, very cool last night…glad I remembered to close all the
windows before going to bed. Some on FB say they had light frost on their roofs
this morning. Odd for July. It did warm up fairly quickly and the windows are open
again.
Skateboards have been around a long time…they were just starting
when I was a teenager. Never got into it. This summer a group of kids keep
visiting my next door neighbor’s HS kid. They arrive every afternoon with
skateboards. Some are actually good with their tricks. Haven’t seen any
injuries either. But a group of 7 or 8 skateboards can make quiet a noise. Not
being a grumpy old guy, just commenting.
Really?!?...21,500,000 OPM personal information stolen, including
family members. I was in the first group announced when it was only gov’t
employees and retirees. The idea that I may have opened family members up to
this debacle is inexcusable. I had to list parents, siblings, parent’s siblings,
cousins and neighbors on that damn form. I recall doing this because I had to
call my cousins to get their information. Yeah, it was about 15 years ago, but
still. My parents and parent’s siblings are long gone, but my cousins, sibling
and many neighbors are still alive and well. Some of these thefts weren’t even
detected for more than a year. The forced resignation of the leader is far from
enough. Better look into the IT department too…they are the ones who really
failed all of us. This may sound harsh, but I see the word ‘treason’ being used
in the near future. This is my personal information that was required to keep my
job. I sat through quite a few background checks for people I knew in the
Bureau during their background checks. Believe me the questions were VERY
personal…like…’Does this employee have a good marriage?’, ‘Have you observed
any behavior that would suggest infidelity in the marriage?’ ‘Does this
employee have an alcohol abuse problem?’ ‘Have you ever seen this employee
drunk?’ ‘Have you ever seen this employee involved in a physical confrontation?’
‘Would you give the key to your home to this person to watch your house when
you are on vacation?’ Now all that information is out there somewhere. Can’t
find words to express my anger!

Time - California inventor Matt McMullen, who makes the world's most
realistic life-sized female doll, the RealDoll (with exquisite skin texture and
facial and body architecture, and which sells for $5,000 to $10,000, depending
on customization), is working with engineers experienced in robotics to add
animation -- but according to a June New York Times report, faces a built-in
problem. As a pioneer Japanese robotics developer observed, robots that become
too humanlike tend to disgust rather than satisfy. Hence, the more lifelike
McMullen makes his RealDolls, the more likely the customer is to be creeped out
rather than turned on -- perhaps forcing the virtuoso McMullen to leave enough
imperfection to reassure the customer that it's just a doll.

During
World War II the U.S. government used 260 million pounds of instant coffee.
Flavored coffees are created after the roasting process by applying flavored
oils specially created to use on coffee beans.
In 1670, Dorothy Jones of Boston was granted a license to sell coffee, and so
became the first American coffee trader.
In 1727, as a result of seedlings smuggled from Paris, coffee plants first were
cultivated in Brazil.
Milk as an additive to coffee became popular in the 1680's, when a French
physician recommended that cafe au lait be used for medicinal purposes.
Roasted coffee beans start to lose small amounts of flavor within two weeks.
Ground coffee begins to lose its flavor in one hour. Brewed coffee and espresso
begins to lose flavor within minutes.
