My Rambling Thoughts

Watching the flooding in Texas now is so different than the Katrina mess. While this is devastating, so many government agencies are working well together. And the message is very coordinated. There is no timetable to reopen Houston airports. Scary.

Monsoon continues. Nice. This morning there was a hard rain, then all of a sudden pea sized hail for a few minutes. Then a gentle rain and within 30 minutes all the moisture stopped. Usually, it is hail first, but not this Monday. Thankfully our rain is not related to Harvey.

Phx news is reporting that Arpaio may be running for the Senate to replace Sen. Flake in 2018. Flake is not a Trump minion and 85-year-old Arpaio is. Let's see, yeah, a first time 86 year old Senator from AZ sounds normal for this state.

*----- Car Thief Stopped to Look At Eclipse -----*

Authorities in Florida said they arrested a suspected car thief who pulled into a store while being pursued so he could buy a welding mask and look at the eclipse. The Orange County Sheriff's Office said members of the Auto Theft Unit were pursuing a car driven by Jocsan Feliciano Rosado, 22, when the vehicle pulled into a parking lot in Kissimmee. Deputies said Rosado went into the store and bought a welding helmet with blue flame decals on it. He was arrested while standing next to the stolen car and looking at the solar eclipse. "He never saw it coming," the sheriff's office said. "That only happens every 99 years."

My Rambling Thoughts

I had a great lunch for a discussion group member who was turning 75. About 30 people. Six of us were from the discussion group. Met some very interesting people. One lady works at a tourist shop in Williams. Great stories of her customers from around the world. Another lady was a teacher at TC Public School. She started the year I retired and stayed 10 years. Shared great stories and our enjoyable times in TC. It was a great time. The birthday girl’s husband arranged everything. He didn’t mention anything about gifts. I brought a plant. Most people brought something. We ordered off the menu and that’s when we discovered that the host was paying the entire bill. Another nice surprise. The bill had to be close to $500 + tip. Very enjoyable.

45 is a master manipulator. His Friday night news dump set off several firestorms. The biggest against Sheriff Joe Arpaio from the Phx area. I have several Navajo friends who have children living in the Phoenix area. A few years ago Arpaio was stopping ‘brown’ people as possible illegal immigrants. The kids living there were either going to school or working in full-time positions. During this time they all carried their census cards with them at all times. The census card is given to enrolled members to prove their Indian-ness. All AZ tribes have some form of this card. In the world before the crackdown, that card was kept in a safe place at home with birth certificates, etc. If they were stopped for being brown, the census card would get them released. Latinos were carrying their birth certificate. The crackdown policy ended up in a Federal court as a misdemeanor. Arpaio asked for a jury trial. The fed court said no, it was too expensive for a misdemeanor. The judge ruled that the sheriff was guilty of not following a court order to stop the crackdown. He would have been sentenced in October. Arpaio was in the process of appealing the conviction. In a precedent setting move, 45 pardoned him BEFORE he was even sentenced and BEFORE any appeals were decided and BEFORE the mighty sheriff showed any remorse.

Hurricane Harvey took up most of the news. The pardon sucked up the rest. The same dump clarified the ban on Transgenders in the military. Not much news about that, yet. Trump aide Gorka left the WH staff but no one seems to know if he resigned or was fired. No news on that.

While the Harvey news is not good, it is not as bad as expected. But it will be around for about another week. First responders are telling those who didn’t evacuate should put their SS# on their arm. Scary and very creepy.

Bizarre News

Police in Germany announced they seized about 5,000 ecstasy tablets modeled after the head of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Osnabrueck Police said they searched a car during a traffic stop about 9 p.m. Saturday and discovered the approximately $12,900 worth of ecstasy tablets, which bore the image of Trump's face on one side and his name on the opposite side.

Police said they also seized a large amount of cash from the vehicle, which was registered in Austria.

The driver, a 51-year-old man, and his 17-year-old son were detained and are expected to be charged with drug trafficking, police said.

Police said the pair had been coming from Amsterdam, where the drugs are believed to have been produced.

My Rambling Thoughts

Big monsoon again last evening. So nice! Not excited about night temps dropping so much, but it is all part of the cycle.

Hurricane Harvey is hitting land. Very frightening…especially for those who decided to stay and not believe the Fake News.

One of our Discussion group members is celebrating #75 tomorrow. Her husband is having a lunch at a great locally owned steakhouse. Should be fun for all, especially since she is recovered from her recent knee replacement. Looking forward to seeing all. I got her a small miniature rose. Nothing was said about gifts and nothing was said how the lunch would be paid for, but however, it works out I’ll have a good time.

45 is headed for Camp David. Should be surprised, it is the weekend. And as a big shot businessman, he knows that Saturday and Sunday are for relaxation. Never mind how he bashed Obama for his occasional weekend getaways. And there is no FEMA director so this is being coordinated by an acting person. I spent much of my last 7 years as ‘acting’ principal at various schools. It was a great experience, but when one is ‘acting’ you can’t really do any long range planning and you simply move from crisis to crisis during the tenure. Not the best way to run the government. And if you mess up, you are simply sent back to your real job. That never happened to me, but the pressure was always there.

Last week a snake knocked out power to 4,790 residents in South Carolina after it slithered into the wrong section of a electrical substation. But that is small potatoes compared to the baboon who just blacked out 50,000 customers. ZESCO, Zambia's electricity producer and distributor, said a baboon tampered with high voltage machines at the Livingston station, causing about 50,000 customers to lose power. The company said employees investigating the outage found the baboon suffering from injuries related to the shock it received from the machines. The primate was turned over to the Zambia Wildlife Authority, which said the baboon was being treated in an Intensive Care Unit. "The lines the baboon was tampering with are extremely high voltage," ZESCO spokesman Henry Kapata told local news. "You can see that it was electrocuted in so many ways but it has survived. It is an animal, we cannot prosecute it otherwise if it was a human we would have taken it to court." Kapata said the baboon likely survived the encounter thanks to the animals' heavily insulated palms. He said a human would have probably been killed in the same situation.
