My Rambling Thoughts

Had another small monsoon last night, and today is building to a much bigger one. So much for my clean car. Still not complaining.

Happy to watch the Bronco’s win last night. Could have been nicer, but as my dear mom used to say ‘a win in a win.’

Long lines for gas in Florida. Reminds me of the long lines back in the 1970’s. So thankful I live in a desert.

I have always been a PC guy. I also learned MAC because it was better for doing certain student projects at the school. My first cell phones were not Apple. I am now on my third Apple. And I really like it. It’s a 6+ so I have missed one new phone. The new one sure looks good. Price doesn’t. Have to do some serious thinking between now and its release. Attention Verizon: give me a GRRREAT deal!

*- Diplomatic Immunity (Has Just Been Revoked) -*

Police announced that they will not charge a girl in connection with the stabbing of a boy because she has diplomatic immunity. Police were called to the British International School of Washington on a report of a stabbing. Police officers who arrived at the scene, found a 13-year-old boy suffering from stab wounds to the shoulders. The 12-year-old girl used a knife to stab the boy. The girl was taken into custody, but she was quickly released after declaring her diplomatic immunity. Police cannot arrested diplomats or their family members. They are also exempt from prosecution. The boy was rushed to the Children's National Medical Center, where he is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

My Rambling Thoughts

Today would have been my mother’s 98^th birthday. She had a good life of 89 years, a loving husband, and 2 great kids who loved her very much. She is missed.

Took my vehicle to a quick car wash. It looks much better. Summer rain and dirt is gone. In a few weeks, I’ll do a full-service wash and get everything looking like new. Just in time for fall.

A few months ago I saw a post from a young environmentalist. We became ‘Friends’ and I just finished his new book We Rise: The Earth Guardians Guide to Building a Movement That Restores the Planet’. He was also just on Real Time. He is a 17 year old Aztec/Mexican and was raised in Boulder, CO. Check out Xiuhtezcatl Martinez’s new book, his Ted Talks, and his bio. A young man with a true mission.

Florida seems to have survived. I’ve heard from most of my friends down there and all are OK/Safe. Now they are into cleanup. The one colleague I haven’t heard from is one I never hear from, but a friend will let me know later this week.

I have two suggestions to all the 24-hour news channels. #1: When a disaster occurs it is not necessary to put your reporters out in the elements 24/7. You claim they are were all protected and many were tethered. And they are telling everyone in the area to hunker down inside, while they are outside. Many watching do not know all the safety precautions, and might just go outside. Also, many announced that electricity was out for miles and then said ‘Keep watching our station for the latest on this disaster, and what you should do.’ Really?

#2: We need to have updates and maybe some live shots, but not 24/7. How about having a 30 minute broadcast every hour with other news. The world situation did not stop while Irma was doing her damage.

A woman offered her breast milk to fellow attendees at Burning Man, for lattes and hangover cures. Miki Agrawal shared photos of herself pumping breast milk while walking around the festival to share with other guests. "I pumped my breasts every three hours at Burning Man and gave away most of my milk," Argawal wrote. "Some people downed a whole four ounces hoping for a hangover cure. Some wanted it for their coffee to make lattes." Argawal estimated that about 30 to 40 people tried her breast milk and she gave a bag to a coffee camp. "They had regular, soy and breast milk as the options," she said. Argawal tried some herself, noting it tasted like sweet coconut milk, but said the experience helped her notice a lack of awareness about motherhood. Argawal added that she believes it's time to have "a greater conversation about" why people find it uncomfortable to discuss breast pumping.

Quiet Sunday. My brother and his wife are in Mexico City celebrating their anniversary. Nice.

Our current AG here is suing all 3 universities for not following the AZ Constitution. Like everywhere else, tuition costs have skyrocketed in the last decade, taking higher education away from many. Well, back in 1910, 2 years before AZ became a state, there is a clause written into the AZ Constitution which states that university instruction shall be furnished "as nearly free as possible." Over the past 15 years the regents raised tuition from about $2,600 a year to as much as $12,228 a year for in-state students, the suit said. In addition to tuition, those sneaky required fees have also skyrocketed. At present, every student pays an ‘athletic fee’ and other campus fees, even if you are taking online classes.  Haven’t been a fan of our conservative AG, but this is great.

A New Jersey man was ordered to pay thousands of dollars in restitution to an airline over his drunken and disruptive behavior on a flight. James August was ordered to pay Hawaiian Airlines $97,817 after the flight was forced to return to the gate due to his bad behavior. He was also sentenced to three years’ probation. The ruling came after August pleaded guilty to interfering with flight crew members and flight attendants. The money will be taken out of August's paycheck. 10 percent of his gross income will be handed over each month to the airline until the restitution is paid in full. According to court records, August was traveling with his girlfriend and her three children from Honolulu to New York. He allegedly became abusive towards his girlfriend and her children. Two male flight attendants held him down while the captain turned back to the gate. The judge ordered August to reimburse the airline for costs it incurred when turning the plane around, including fuel, maintenance, and ground crew and for passengers who had to catch other flights. 

Who wouldn't take a peek? It's human nature. But five nurses at Denver Health Medical Center were suspended for three weeks after they inappropriately viewed a deceased patient's body and talked about it, a hospital spokesman confirmed.

The nurses admired the size of the deceased patient's genitals and at one point opened a body bag to view parts of the body. 

A different nurse heard one of the disciplined nurses make a comment that the nurse felt was inappropriate and reported it to hospital staff, Denver Health Medical Center spokesman Josh Rasmussen said.

"Multiple staff members viewed the victim while he was incapacitated, including after he was deceased," a Denver Police report says. Denver Police responded to the incident but say the decision was made to have Denver Health Medical Center handle the issue internally.

"A DPD officer did speak with one of our on-call prosecutors at the time," Ken Lane, communications director for the Denver District Attorney's Office, said. "They determined there was insufficient evidence to prove a crime was committed, no charges were filed, and referred the matter back to Denver Health to handle internally."

Rasmussen said he could not provide the names of the nurses involved. It was not reported exactly how big the body part was.
